As detailed in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, the detrimental phytoplankton blooms began in 2011, resulting in significant ecological shifts within the Indian River Lagoon. These tiny plant-like organisms triggered a dramatic decline in seagrass populations, which fell by over 50%, and a staggering 75% loss of macroalgae, commonly known as seaweed. This alteration in the ecosystem has far-reaching implications, affecting not only the health of the lagoon but also the species that rely on it for sustenance.
Dietary Changes Among Dolphins: A Closer Look at Nutritional Deficiencies
Although the decline in seagrass and seaweed alone would not account for the dolphin die-off, further investigations revealed a crucial factor. By analyzing isotopic ratios in tooth samples from deceased dolphins and comparing them with those from 44 healthy dolphins, researchers discovered that the diets of the affected dolphins had shifted dramatically. They consumed between 14% to 20% fewer ladyfish, which are essential prey for dolphins, while their intake of less nutritious sea bream increased by up to 25%. Consequently, the abundance of phytoplankton led to a scarcity of food for their usual prey, forcing dolphins to expend more energy to catch sufficient food, which negatively impacted the entire dolphin population in the area. Reports indicated that at that time, 64% of observed dolphins were underweight, and 5% were labeled as emaciated.
“In combination, the shift in diets and the widespread presence of malnourishment suggest that dolphins were struggling to catch enough prey of any type,” stated Wendy Noke Durden, a research scientist at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute. The loss of critical habitats may have severely hampered overall foraging success, causing shifts in both the abundance and distribution of prey species.

Data collected on the causes of death for stranded dolphins show that starvation accounted for 17% of recorded dolphin deaths in the region between 2000 and 2020. In most cases, people’s activities drive these excess loads. Managing our activities to keep nutrients at a safe level is key to preventing blooms that disrupt ecological systems.” This insight underscores the critical importance of sustainable practices in protecting marine ecosystems.
