Envisioning Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool without his signature presence is nearly impossible; his character embodies the essence of a “main character syndrome” with his spectacular fourth-wall breaks. Recently, Reynolds reaffirmed a point he has made before: moving forward, the witty, R-rated hero from Deadpool & Wolverine will embrace a role that highlights teamwork and ensemble dynamics rather than positioning himself as the sole protagonist.
During an engaging interview on Sunday Today (as reported by Variety), Reynolds elaborated that fans should anticipate Deadpool making appearances within the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, although it won’t manifest as many might assume: he will not be leading a fourth standalone Deadpool film.
“I have some ideas kind of drafted, but I don’t envision ever centering the story around him again,” Reynolds stated. He played a pivotal role in co-writing the screenplays for Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, while also serving as a producer for all three Deadpool films.
“He is a supporting character. He excels in a group dynamic.”
In December 2024, Reynolds hinted to Hollywood Reporter that his thoughts were steering towards this collaborative direction, despite the massive success of that year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
“Focusing on Deadpool works best when you strip everything away from him and place him in dire situations. I can’t really replicate that experience,” Reynolds expressed. “A fourth installment feels somewhat repetitive and unnecessary. However, this doesn’t imply sacrificing the fun; there remains a fulfilling and impactful arc for Deadpool.”
In September 2025, Entertainment Weekly inquired about the speculation surrounding Deadpool‘s potential appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Like any cautious actor aware of the Marvel dynamics, he maintained a level of ambiguity, asserting he had never “set foot on set.”
We will discover the truth when Doomsday premieres in December—a film poised to clarify the future trajectory of the MCU, including potential developments regarding the X-Men, and possibly featuring a scene-stealing Deadpool.
