Key Details Surrounding the Discovery of the Crocodile Skull at India Airport
During a routine security check, customs officials stopped the 32-year-old man, whose name has not been publicly released, after discovering he was carrying “a skull with sharp teeth.” According to reports from PEOPLE, the authorities quickly identified the item as resembling the jaw of a baby crocodile. This alarming find led to a deeper investigation into the man’s intentions as he prepared to board his flight to Canada.
Delhi Customs later shared an update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the skull was indeed that of a baby crocodile. CNN reported that the Department of Forests and Wildlife conducted a thorough forensic examination, confirming the skull’s origin based on its texture, distinctive tooth pattern, bony palate, and the unique shape of its nostrils. This examination revealed that the crocodile is a protected species, safeguarded under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, highlighting the legal implications of possessing such an item.
As a result of this incident, the man was arrested for illegally possessing the skull, which not only violates wildlife protection laws but also contravenes the Customs Act of 1962. In a significant move, the Department of Forests and Wildlife took possession of the crocodile skull for laboratory analysis, ensuring that this protected wildlife item would not be lost or mishandled.
“This case highlights a serious violation of wildlife and customs laws,” Delhi Customs stated. “Collaboration between Customs and Forest Departments is crucial to ensuring that protected wildlife items are not smuggled across borders.”

Future Actions Regarding the Crocodile Skull and Insights into Wildlife Trafficking in India
The Delhi Customs has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident, seeking to uncover more about the man’s motives and any potential trafficking networks involved. Atul Bagai, the former Head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in India, highlighted this case as a significant breakthrough in combating wildlife smuggling. He emphasized that India ranks among the top ten countries known for utilizing the airline sector for wildlife trafficking, an unfortunate recognition that calls for urgent action.
CNN reported that attempts to smuggle animals and animal parts through Indian airports are not uncommon. From 2011 to 2020, there were 141 recorded incidents of wildlife seizures at various airports, involving a staggering 146 different animal species. Notably, reptiles constituted a significant portion of these seizures, making up 46% of the total incidents, which included various species such as crocodiles, lizards, snakes, and tortoises. This alarming trend underscores the ongoing challenge of wildlife trafficking in India and the need for stricter enforcement measures.
