Chris Brown has successfully avoided incarceration following an incident in which he assaulted a music producer with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub three years prior. The 37-year-old artist received an eight-month prison sentence that is suspended for one year.

Chris Brown Faced Potentially Lengthy Prison Sentence for Assault
Chris Brown was at risk of serving nearly three years in prison after entering a guilty plea to a charge of affray in July, related to the altercation that occurred in February 2023 at Tape, a private club located in the upscale Mayfair area. As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors dropped more severe charges, including assault, intent to cause serious bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon—a bottle.
“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that manner, particularly aimed at the head, was evidently dangerous. It posed a significant risk of resulting in a more serious injury than what was ultimately sustained,” Judge Tony Baumgartner stated during the proceedings at Southwark Crown Court.
Despite the gravity of the assault, Judge Baumgartner determined that Brown did not warrant a custodial sentence due to his guilty plea and several mitigating factors, such as stable employment and charitable contributions. The judge recognized Brown’s prior convictions but noted his clean record in recent years.
In a related development, Chris Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence. Affray involves the use or threat of unlawful violence that instills fear for personal safety.
Court Presentation Included Video Evidence of the Assault
During the court proceedings, video evidence was presented, depicting Chris Brown being restrained from approaching the victim, his former friend Abraham Diaw. The footage revealed that Brown struck Diaw twice in the head with a bottle. Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe emphasized Brown’s prominent role in the incident.
“Under any circumstances, watching that footage shows that Mr. Brown initiated the altercation,” Stonecliffe remarked.

Diaw was discharged from the hospital with injuries to his head and knee, as noted by Stonecliffe. Meanwhile, Chris Brown’s defense attorney, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, mentioned that Chris apologized to everyone present at the nightclub that evening. She also highlighted that the altercation lasted no more than 20 seconds.
“This is a regrettable and disturbing incident,” Bennett-Jenkins stated. “It undoubtedly caused distress to those present, and Mr. Brown extends a sincere apology to everyone who witnessed it.”
Fans Show Support for Breezy Outside the Courthouse
Fans traveled from as far as Italy and the Netherlands to cheer for Chris Brown outside the courthouse. He concealed his face with a black mask and dark glasses, while a black ball cap mostly hid his bleached hair. Dressed in a black leather jacket and a light-colored turtleneck, he blew a kiss to one admirer and appeared to sign an autograph for another as he navigated through a crowd of photographers and observers.

Not all reactions were positive. Upon his arrival at the court, one individual was heard shouting at him, questioning when he would comprehend that violence is unacceptable.
Following the incident, Brown departed the United Kingdom. He was later apprehended in May 2025 at a hotel in Manchester after traveling to the city for a concert. His bail of 5 million pounds ($6.7 million) allowed him to tour across Europe and North America over the past two summers.
