OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health Feature for U.S. Users Aged 18 and Above
OpenAI is introducing its innovative health feature, ChatGPT Health, to users aged 18 and older residing in the United States. Initially tested in January through a dedicated portal, this enhanced version allows ChatGPT to incorporate relevant health information into any conversation.
This new functionality aims to enhance the chatbot’s existing capacity to respond to health inquiries. OpenAI asserts that its advanced GPT-5.6 Sol model significantly enhances this capability. The responses are now grounded in personal health information, including doctors’ notes, lab results, and other pertinent data. To connect your health data, you can navigate to ChatGPT’s new Health tab, where OpenAI will provide guidance for linking the chatbot with Apple Health (utilizing the Healthkit framework) and healthcare providers such as Kaiser Permanente or One Medical. ChatGPT will also prompt you to review your current medical conditions, medications, and family health history to ensure accurate interpretation of your data.
Once your health data is connected, you can revisit the Health tab to explore your records, observe recent health trends, and find suggested prompts to engage ChatGPT. The primary functionality of ChatGPT Health is activated whenever health-related topics arise during a conversation. OpenAI carefully positions its responses as summaries of medical appointments, interpretations of test results, and assistance in becoming a more informed patient. users can still seek direct advice from the chatbot. It is important to keep in mind that ChatGPT may occasionally produce errors, and its suggestions should not be construed as formal diagnoses or treatment recommendations, even if expressed with confidence.
Privacy remains a critical factor when sharing sensitive information like health records. As previously stated when ChatGPT Health was introduced, OpenAI guarantees that your medical data is not used to train foundational models or for advertising purposes, irrespective of your personalized settings. You retain control over when ChatGPT utilizes your health data, with the option to require the chatbot to request permission each time it wishes to access your information. You can disconnect any linked health data at your convenience.
The timing of OpenAI’s announcement raises concerns due to ongoing legal challenges. The company faces a lawsuit from a pastor who claims that ChatGPT provided unsafe medical advice that deterred him from seeking treatment for a pulmonary embolism. OpenAI is entangled in a separate lawsuit with Apple, which complicates its reliance on Apple Health as a key data source. While OpenAI cannot control its legal circumstances, individuals must decide whether they are comfortable sharing their medical information with ChatGPT.
