This past Wednesday, Marvel showcased its remarkable ability to capture the internet’s attention, as millions tuned in to watch a live stream featuring 27 chairs arranged in a row for an astonishing five hours. How many people engaged with this event? A staggering number of online viewers.
According to Deadline, the highly anticipated cast announcement for Doomsday garnered over 275 million views during its runtime, alongside 3.1 million mentions across various social media platforms. This impressive performance surpassed the previous view records set by the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer. Even 24 hours after its release, while fans were still cracking light-hearted jokes about the chairs, the livestream maintained its position as the #2 trending stream on YouTube. Interestingly, Marvel later condensed the entire five-hour spectacle into a brief two-minute highlight reel for Twitter, yet the live experience remained unmatched.

In light of the recent criticisms surrounding Marvel’s creative direction—stemming from a perceived decline in quality following the epic Endgame and the transition toward Disney+—the success of this livestream underscores Marvel’s enduring influence on pop culture over the past two decades. This continued engagement is especially notable considering the lukewarm reception of Captain America: Brave New World. While many might expect that any other studio attempting to engage audiences for over five hours with a simple display of chairs could have faced disaster, Marvel manages to thrive in this peculiar scenario.
Marvel’s ambitious approach with Doomsday features an eclectic cast that includes two beloved Avengers A-Listers, the iconic Fantastic Four, a significant portion of the cast from the forthcoming Thunderbolts, and several recognizable faces from the Fox X-Men franchise, alongside a few stalwart MCU favorites. This diverse mix has sparked fan speculation about potential plot developments—either related to Doomsday or the anticipated multiversal escapades in Secret Wars. The studio’s hints suggest that there is indeed more excitement on the horizon.
“That’s what you call a deep bench of talent…actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one…that must be it…right?” joked Robert Downey Jr. in the comments of his Instagram post regarding this project. Marvel Studios quickly chimed in, adding intrigue with their response:
“There’s always room for more…”
How long will audiences remain captivated by a lineup of sitting chairs this time around?
