Carrie remains a pivotal narrative from the 1970s. Stephen King’s groundbreaking debut novel debuted in 1974, and Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation is heralded as one of the quintessential horror masterpieces of that era. Despite its long-standing legacy, various filmmakers have revisited this iconic story over the years. Mike Flanagan, whose series adaptation is set to premiere on Prime Video this fall, recognizes both the immense legacy of Carrie and the need to innovate rather than repeat.
Flanagan has approached this adaptation with great respect for the original while feeling assured that he has created something unique. During the San Diego Comic-Con panel, which featured cast members, the first teaser, and several exclusive clips, Flanagan revealed how this eight-episode series offers a fresh yet profoundly unsettling perspective on the classic tale.
“Bullying dynamics have significantly evolved in the 50 years since the novel’s publication,” Flanagan noted. “Our understanding of the factors that contribute to such behavior has also advanced considerably. Bullying manifests in various forms. We took great care to involve high school students in our writing process. They shared their experiences, revealing the shocking incidents and the ongoing microaggressions that many face, which often go unrecognized as the targeted harassment they truly are.”
The internet plays a crucial role in the changing landscape of bullying, and this theme will be prominently featured in the new adaptation of Carrie. Flanagan explained that the internet has “fostered a culture of cruelty, rewarding and amplifying it while allowing it to thrive behind a veil of anonymity. This is challenging for adults, let alone for teenagers.”
In alignment with this contemporary perspective, the portrayal of Carrie, played by Summer H. Howell, diverges from what horror enthusiasts might expect. “In previous adaptations, Carrie White is often introduced trembling with trauma from the very first glance,” Flanagan elaborated. “Our interpretation presents Carrie as someone who has spent her entire life isolated in her home, shielded by her mother and father, without ever stepping into the outside world. This results in a character who is earnest, eager, curious, and open to new experiences. Through her eyes, we can examine the normalized behaviors in our high schools and witness the reality of the modern experience.”
This modern experience includes navigating metal detectors and participating in active shooter drills, as well as the amplification of her personal struggles through social media. “I made numerous mistakes in high school while discovering my identity, but those mistakes remained private, contained within my school’s walls,” Flanagan reflected. “My son, now a high school freshman, lives in a world where such mistakes are public and can be immortalized online indefinitely. This represents a profound shift. We will explore this world through the eyes of an innocent character, which became a significant aspect of the show.”
A critical element of the narrative is the prom scene. Flanagan insists that even if you believe you know how that moment unfolds, “you don’t.” He described the sequence as “the most intricate scene I have ever filmed,” calling it “a showstopper and one of the highlights of my career.”
This sense of unpredictability extends throughout the entire series. Flanagan acknowledged that while he has successfully completed faithful adaptations in the past, such as The Haunting of Hill House, Carrie represents a more innovative approach. “Deconstructing the story into its fundamental elements allows us to create something entirely new. This is the angle we took with Carrie,” Flanagan teased. “Stephen King was genuinely excited about our adaptation. Many people think they understand what this show is about, but I am most eager for viewers to discover the big surprises we have in store.”
