Despite the lengthy feud between Anthropic and the Pentagon, the National Security Agency is now utilizing the AI company’s latest innovation, Mythos Preview, as reported by Axios, which consulted two informed sources. Anthropic unveiled Mythos Preview in early April, highlighting it as a versatile language model that excels in computer security tasks. However, in February, former President Trump mandated all government entities to cease using Anthropic’s services following the company’s refusal to compromise on specific safeguards intended for military applications during contract negotiations.
This development comes shortly after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei engaged in discussions with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and other officials, reportedly regarding Mythos. The White House later characterized the meeting on Friday as “productive and constructive,” although President Trump claimed he had “no idea” about it when queried by reporters, according to Reuters. As per Axios’ sources, the NSA is among approximately 40 organizations that have been granted access to Mythos Preview, with one source indicating it is “being utilized more extensively within the department” as well.
Anthropic remains entangled in a legal conflict with the U.S. government. In March, Anthropic initiated lawsuits against the Department of Defense in two separate courts after the Trump administration classified the company as a “supply chain risk,” prompting a swift response from the Pentagon. Although Anthropic received a preliminary injunction from one court to temporarily overturn this designation, federal judges in the other court denied its motion to lift the label.
