At last year’s Google I/O, we glimpsed the potential of Android XR, which left us excited yet wanting more. This year, Google announced that the first smart glasses from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are set to launch later this year.
While details about these frames remain limited, the I/O keynote provided a better understanding of how Google’s smart glasses will function. With Meta having a significant head start in this arena, Google faces a challenge to prove its worth. despite being late to the smart glasses market, Google possesses several notable advantages. After testing the latest Android XR glasses, I believe many users may find these more appealing than Meta’s Ray-Ban models.
The glasses I evaluated were not the branded frames showcased during the keynote. Instead, they were “reference hardware” utilized by Google for internal development. These glasses featured a built-in display, contrasting with the Warby Parker and Gentle Monster models, which are designed solely for audio. Despite being prototypes, they did not appear or feel overly experimental. While slightly less refined than my Ray-Ban Meta frames, they were not bulky or unattractive. They felt significantly lighter than the more substantial Meta Ray-Ban Display frames.
The display configuration resembles the prototype I encountered last year, featuring a single window positioned over the right lens. In the reference hardware, it offered a 20-degree field of view, though Google noted that specifications may evolve.
The display was impressive, delivering clarity and brightness comparable to Meta’s offerings. Even the audio-only Android XR glasses showed significant potential advantages over Meta and other competitors. Google has successfully integrated its own applications, including Gemini, into the frames, enhancing their functionality.
For instance, using Google Translate was more seamless than my experiences with Meta’s glasses. I effortlessly switched between a Google representative speaking Spanish and my colleague Igor Bonifacic, who was speaking Serbian, with the glasses maintaining uninterrupted translation. They intelligently filtered out the English speakers around me, displaying real-time translations only for the conversations in foreign languages. Although scenarios requiring multi-language translation in real-time conversations may be rare, this capability highlights Google’s edge.
While I have generally appreciated Meta’s AI glasses for translation, they only support one language at a time. users must download the language packs to their phones in advance, complicating spontaneous translations.

The audio-only glasses will also leverage multimodal capabilities, utilizing onboard cameras and Gemini to provide information based on the user’s environment. During my demo, I looked at a recipe and instructed Gemini to add the ingredients to my shopping list on Google Keep. Although Gemini briefly struggled with this command, I could continue speaking without interruption, and it adjusted seamlessly.
One of my main criticisms of Meta’s glasses has been their limited compatibility with third-party applications. While Meta is working to expand this, their current offerings excel primarily in reading WhatsApp messages or Instagram DMs, lacking options outside their ecosystem. Android XR may also depend heavily on Google’s ecosystem for now, but accessing essential applications like Maps, Gmail, and Keep feels much more relevant to my daily needs.
Google Maps, in particular, can be incredibly beneficial. In my recent demo, I received walking directions displayed on the screen, along with a small map view when I glanced down. Although the audio-only XR glasses won’t feature a visual guide, Google can still provide walking directions through audio cues. Users can also inquire about nearby restaurants and businesses, requesting reviews and information from Gemini. I have long believed that travel represents a prime use case for smart glasses. Integrating Google Maps data into this experience offers a significant advantage, especially when combined with features like real-time translations and navigation.
I still have several unanswered questions regarding how these features will function in consumer-ready glasses. Google has yet to disclose specifications or pricing for the retail version of these glasses. Nevertheless, there is much to anticipate.
