After two years since the launch of the AMD mainboard for the Framework Laptop 13, the time has come for the first replacement model to hit the market. This new version features AMD’s Ryzen AI 300, a series of power-efficient chips designed for notebooks that can handle all the latest AI technologies that industry leaders claim are essential for modern computing.
Framework was kind enough to send me the latest AMD mainboard for installation into the existing chassis, accompanied by a new bezel and input cover. In a departure from their usual solid colors, the company now offers translucent plastic options reminiscent of the late ’90s, popular among those who owned Game Boy Colors. Personally, I find the tinted translucent option to be more appealing than the clear version, but feel free to judge for yourself based on the accompanying images.

Potential buyers have three enticing options available: they can opt for a brand new pre-built laptop featuring the Ryzen AI 300, choose a DIY edition to assemble themselves, or simply acquire the mainboard independently. Regardless of your choice, you can select between a Ryzen 5 340, Ryzen 7 350, or the flagship Ryzen 9 HX 370, which supports up to 96GB of RAM. Naturally, the cost increases as you elevate your technical aspirations.
I received the mid-range Ryzen 7 350, which I managed to swap into the existing AMD model in about 11 minutes. It’s amusing to reflect that my first attempt took nearly an hour, but once you become familiar with the process, it becomes second nature. If you’re like me and have lost the muscle memory for component swapping since the turn of the millennium, rest assured that this task is entirely manageable.
The performance of the Ryzen 7 350 is adequate for the range of tasks typically expected from a 13-inch laptop. I didn’t notice a significant, groundbreaking improvement compared to the 7840U it replaced. For standard activities such as work, browsing, and streaming videos, this laptop handles it all seamlessly and efficiently.
As always, the primary advantage of recommending the AMD model over its Intel counterpart lies in its superior gaming performance. For instance, you can easily achieve 50 to 60 frames per second in popular titles like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto V, making this laptop a versatile all-rounder for both work and play.
However, there are two notable drawbacks to Framework’s modular design. Firstly, the hardware tends to appear more functional than that of its competitors. More critically, all CPU cooling must be integrated onto the mainboard itself. While many machines can be designed with thermal management in mind, this modular setup limits that flexibility. Consequently, the fan located on top of the mainboard must bear the entire cooling responsibility, leading to increased noise levels compared to more modern machines.
Framework claims to have addressed the noise issue by redesigning the heatpipe, optimizing the fan algorithm, and utilizing Honeywell’s PTM7958 thermal paste. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, users will still encounter noticeable fan noise and heat under heavy usage. Moreover, although AMD has marketed the 300 AI as more power-efficient, this new processor impacts battery life negatively. In practice, I found it challenging to achieve a full day of use on a single charge, which seems to be a common trend among many laptops today.

I have consistently praised Framework for its dedication to enhancing every aspect of its hardware components with each iteration. In this latest upgrade, the company collaborated with manufacturing partner Lite-On to revamp their keyboard design. The focus was on subtle improvements, such as printing the keycaps in a slightly thinner weight, updating the fingerprint sensor, and re-engineering the Shift and Enter keys for better functionality.
Fortunately, the beloved 1.5mm key travel remains unchanged, as founder Nirav Patel previously expressed his desire to avoid fixing what isn’t broken. This ensures the keyboard continues to be user-friendly, now featuring a slightly quieter typing experience. Additionally, the keys fit more snugly in their housings compared to the earlier model, indicating an enhancement in quality. Users can also choose between keyboards with a dedicated Windows Copilot key or a Framework key, tailored to their preferred operating system.
Moreover, the company took user feedback into account regarding the tendency of wide keys to rattle during high-volume audio playback. A new supporting structure has been added beneath the Shift and spacebar to minimize vibrations during loud sound output. While I think the original complaint may have been somewhat exaggerated, it’s important to note that my audio selections may not include as much bass as others. Regardless, the improvements are welcome, and during intense audio experiences with explosive sound effects, I observed minimal to no rattling.
Understanding the Compromises of Modular Design
Swapping an Intel mainboard for an AMD one is not straightforward due to compatibility issues that arise with hardware components. Additionally, the AMD boards support different USB standards for various expansion card slots, as depicted in the accompanying diagram. This is a common occurrence for AMD boards across different manufacturers, so it’s an important consideration to keep in mind before proceeding with your purchase.
Final Thoughts on the Framework Laptop 13 Upgrade
If you are already invested in the Framework ecosystem, feel free to delay this upgrade. While the AI 300 does offer enhancements over its predecessor, the improvements may not justify spending several hundred dollars on the new model. However, for those not yet part of this ecosystem, the overall appeal of Framework’s innovative approach may attract you more than this specific update. I suspect that the company’s evolving ecosystem positions it well for future opportunities, especially considering the current geopolitical climate. As the costs of laptops continue to rise, the ability to maintain a single device over the long term becomes increasingly attractive. If you’re looking to enter this ecosystem, it’s wise to consider acquiring one of the discounted Ryzen 7040 machines before they sell out. After all, if you find the performance lacking in a few years, you’ll be in an excellent position to take advantage of the next-generation upgrade when available.
While some may perceive Framework’s underlying platform as becoming somewhat dated, I understand this perspective. Tech enthusiasts often crave the newest and most dazzling gadgets, and when the Laptop 13 initially launched, its design already appeared a generation behind competing 13-inch models. Fast forward five years, and it may struggle to compete with the aesthetics of offerings from Dell, Acer, or ASUS.
However, despite its lack of flashy designs, the Framework Laptop possesses remarkable durability, which will become an even bigger advantage in the coming years. If you’re the type of user who prefers to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad and use it until it wears out, then the Framework Laptop is a superior alternative. With a Framework device, you won’t have to worry about it deteriorating over time.
