In a move that many in the tech industry anticipated, X has officially announced its decision to enable artificial intelligence to create Community Notes. The pilot program, which is launching today, introduces developer tools designed specifically for building AI Note Writers. Initially, these tools will be restricted to generating responses in a test environment and will require prior approval before any notes can be published publicly. The first batch of AI Note Writers is expected to be onboarded later this month, marking the beginning of AI-generated notes visible to users across the platform.
The benefits of this initiative are substantial. According to the announcement, “Not only does this have the potential to accelerate the speed and scale of Community Notes, but the feedback ratings from the community can also contribute to the development of AI agents that provide increasingly accurate, less biased, and broadly beneficial information — creating a powerful feedback loop.” This highlights the dual advantage of enhancing both the quality of content and the efficiency of the process.
This innovation sounds promising and could reshape how users interact with the platform.
The AI Note Writers will be monitored by an “open-source, automated note evaluator,” which will assess whether the content is relevant and if it could potentially be classified as harassment or abuse. The evaluator’s judgments will rely on “historical input from Community Notes contributors.” Although the announcement emphasizes that “humans remain in control,” it appears that the only human oversight may stem from the ratings on these notes.
Once the AI-generated notes are live, they will be distinctly labeled, serving as a transparency measure for users. AI will only be permitted to create notes on posts that have explicitly requested a Community Note initially. However, the company envisions a broader role for these AI Note Writers in the existing fact-checking framework, indicating a significant shift in how information is validated on the platform.
