In late 2022, Reddit launched its innovative AI-powered search tool to enhance user experience. As part of its ongoing evolution, the company is set to integrate this feature into the main sitewide search functionality, as revealed by CEO Steve Huffman during the recent first-quarter earnings call. This strategic move aims to elevate the accessibility and efficiency of finding information on the platform.
“Our goal is to seamlessly incorporate this feature into the core Reddit search experience, thereby simplifying the journey from inquiry to response,” Huffman stated. “This will result in a unified search interface, where users can enter their queries directly into one primary search box. Depending on the nature of the search, users will receive either Reddit Answers or traditional Reddit responses, providing a tailored experience based on their needs.”
Until now, Reddit Answers, which is still categorized as “beta,” has existed in a separate section of the platform. This feature compiles and summarizes discussions from various threads across Reddit, catering to users who might typically append “Reddit” to their searches on Google for information. Huffman noted that Reddit Answers has recently rolled out to all users in the U.S., as well as select international markets, boasting an impressive 1 million weekly users. While this figure represents only a fraction of Reddit’s total 401 million weekly visitors, incorporating it into the primary search could significantly enhance its visibility and usage.
Huffman emphasized that this modification is part of a larger initiative to refine search capabilities on Reddit. The introduction of Reddit Answers is intended to make the platform more welcoming for new users and to assist individuals who arrive on the site via search engines. However, this change may spark some debate among the community, as Reddit users are often resistant to major alterations in the platform; Huffman acknowledged that users might not prefer AI-generated summaries for every inquiry.
“There are instances when users will prefer the concise, annotated, and straightforward answers provided by AI, which we are actively developing within Reddit Answers,” Huffman explained. “Conversely, there are times when users seek the authentic, diverse, and sometimes chaotic perspectives that only Reddit can offer.”
