Disney is significantly enhancing its strategies in artificial intelligence and extended reality technologies. As reported by Reuters, the entertainment giant has launched a dedicated unit focused on emerging technologies, named the Office of Technology Enablement. This innovative team will spearhead Disney’s exploration, adoption, and strategic implementation of AI, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) technologies, ensuring they align with the company’s overall vision and goals.
To lead this initiative, Disney has appointed Jamie Voris, who previously served as the Chief Technology Officer of the company’s Studios Technology division. Voris, who joined Disney in 2010, has a notable background, having previously held the position of chief technology officer at the National Football League. Recently, he played a pivotal role in developing Disney’s Apple Vision Pro app. Voris will report directly to Alan Bergman, the co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, and the company has plans to expand this new unit to approximately 100 employees in the future, as indicated by Reuters.
In an email shared with Engadget, Bergman emphasized the remarkable pace and breadth of advancements in both AI and XR technologies, highlighting their potential to transform consumer experiences, creative processes, and Disney’s business operations for years to come. He stated, “It is critical that Disney explore the exciting opportunities and navigate the potential risks,” reinforcing the company’s commitment to responsible innovation. The establishment of this new group signifies Disney’s proactive approach to shaping the ethical use and best practices surrounding these technologies.
A Disney representative clarified to Engadget that the Office of Technology Enablement will not replace any ongoing AI and XR projects within the company. Instead, its focus will be on providing support to Disney’s various teams, which are already engaged in developing products that utilize these advanced technologies. This initiative aims to ensure that all efforts remain aligned with Disney’s overarching strategic objectives.
The spokesperson elaborated, stating, “It is about bringing added focus, alignment, and velocity to those efforts, and about reinforcing our commitment to being a positive force in shaping responsible use and best practices.” This statement underlines Disney’s dedication to enhancing collaboration across departments while ensuring technological advancements are pursued ethically.
Over the past two decades, Disney has adeptly navigated significant technological transformations, setting itself apart from many of its Hollywood counterparts. A prime example is the company’s innovative use of the Unreal Engine alongside a digital production environment known as The Volume, which has revolutionized the production of VFX-heavy series like The Mandalorian. Given the transformative potential of AI and extended reality technologies, it is both sensible and strategic for Disney to implement additional oversight on how these advancements are integrated within the organization.
