A recent study reveals that brands that actively engage on social media platforms can significantly enhance their visibility in search results generated by artificial intelligence. AI chatbots frequently reference links to social media posts when responding to user inquiries.
The research team from SE Ranking conducted an analysis of 100,000 keywords across various brand niches to identify which sources were most frequently shown in Google search results and AI chatbot interactions.
The findings indicated that links from social media platforms were included in 67.66% of Google AI overview responses, 32.39% of Google AI Mode replies, and 8.4% of ChatGPT responses.

This suggests that an active social media presence can influence how brands are perceived by users of AI chatbots, making it an essential consideration for improving brand visibility in an era of growing AI engagement.
However, it is crucial to note specific details regarding this phenomenon.
In Google’s AI overviews, YouTube, which is owned by Google, is the most frequently referenced source, while Reddit and LinkedIn are the leading social platforms mentioned by ChatGPT.

As illustrated in this overview, references to social platforms like Reddit, LinkedIn, and Facebook are infrequent, appearing in less than 1% of ChatGPT responses to typical queries. Despite this, social media citations are still relevant for users seeking product information, with Reddit maintaining a notable presence in Google AI responses.
However, Reddit’s relevance seems to be declining in ChatGPT interactions.
In August, Search Engine Land highlighted that Reddit’s share of citations in ChatGPT searches plummeted by 86.4% in just four days. While the exact reasons for this shift remain unclear, it demonstrates that AI tools can alter their referencing strategies, which may create inconsistencies in exposure channels.
In contrast, Google maintains a commercial data-sharing agreement with Reddit, which has thus far preserved Reddit’s citation levels in Google’s AI-generated responses.
Given the significant referral traffic that Google AI searches generate for Reddit, it is likely that both companies aim to sustain their partnership for the long term. shifts in perceived value between the two platforms could complicate this relationship.
SE Ranking also examined the most common branded and non-branded queries within Google’s AI Mode.

This graphic reveals that social media sources were cited in 39.34% of branded query responses and 48.58% of non-branded searches, with Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit being the most frequently referenced platforms.
The data underscores the importance of a robust social media presence in enhancing visibility within AI discovery processes. It also illustrates that there is no universal strategy for optimizing exposure to AI chatbots.
Unlike traditional SEO, which has been predominantly influenced by Google, optimizing for AI tools requires a flexible approach tailored to each specific platform. Nevertheless, having a strong social media presence can significantly boost a brand’s visibility in AI chatbot queries.
