Valuable Targets: Data Centers Beyond Warfare

Ukraine’s recent attack on Russian data centers highlights a troubling trend: these massive facilities are increasingly becoming targets in modern warfare. Earlier this year, Iranian forces targeted Amazon data centers in the United Arab Emirates, leaving them inoperable for several months.

Though attacks on data centers may seem distant from American concerns, cybersecurity expert Charles Brooks emphasizes their ongoing vulnerability to both physical and digital attacks within the United States.

“Everything you do online is processed through a data center,” states Brooks, who serves as an adjunct lecturer in cybersecurity at Georgetown University.

For instance, activities such as binge-watching on Netflix, using Google Docs, and conducting personal banking all depend on the servers located in data centers.

Critical cloud computing services utilized by government agencies, healthcare organizations, financial institutions, and businesses rely heavily on these facilities. Brooks notes their importance extends to vital Earth-to-space communications as well.

This reliance on data centers has made them attractive targets for state-sponsored hackers, who may aim to steal sensitive information or disrupt operations entirely.

Brooks reflects on the saying, “data is the new oil,” asserting its truth in contemporary discussions. Just as oil resources have historically drawn the attention of governments and military forces, the value of data has surged, integrating it into the fabric of critical infrastructure.

“A breach at a data center could lead to catastrophic consequences,” warns Brooks, highlighting the severity of potential security incidents in the U.S.

Understanding the Key Threats Facing U.S. Data Centers

While a drone attack on an American data center remains improbable, Brooks points out that a physical breach using explosives could still occur. Although the damage may be limited, such an attack would symbolize a significant victory for terrorists or extremist groups opposed to artificial intelligence and its infrastructure.

Identifying Physical Security Weaknesses

Brooks argues that data centers require more robust security measures than just surveillance cameras and alarms. He advocates for electrified perimeters, on-site security personnel, and protective barriers surrounding control centers and cooling systems.

Addressing Insider Threats

Insider threats pose a significant risk, as individuals with authorized access can exploit their positions to compromise servers and data. Whether motivated by discontent, financial incentives from adversaries, or simple errors, insiders can inadvertently or intentionally expose critical vulnerabilities.

To combat this, Brooks suggests integrating AI surveillance to monitor for abnormal behavior, which can help detect potential malicious activity from insiders. He believes that addressing false positives, where innocent employees may be flagged, is a worthwhile trade-off given the sensitive information housed in data centers.

Brooks recommends implementing thorough background checks akin to those required for staff in hospitals and power plants.

“Hiring practices must reflect the heightened responsibilities associated with these roles,” Brooks emphasizes.

The Threat of AI-Enhanced Cyberattacks

The rise of AI tools is enabling malicious actors to amplify their hacking efforts, particularly against data centers.

For instance, Anthropic recently published a security report revealing how individuals, including those funded by foreign governments, are utilizing AI to automate cyber espionage operations.

Brooks explains that AI simplifies the process for criminal hacker groups, allowing them to effectively scour the internet for vulnerabilities in data center security. This can include tactics such as phishing employees to gain access to their system credentials.

“These attackers are scaling their operations to a much greater capacity, employing AI software to uncover vulnerabilities that may have previously gone unnoticed,” Brooks notes.

Why Is Data Center Security Crucial for Americans?

Brooks contends that the security of data centers is a national security concern, given their role as critical infrastructure.

Even if a digital breach in an American data center feels abstract, the repercussions could significantly impact everyday lives. Individuals may find themselves unable to work, suffer business disruptions, or fall victim to ransomware attacks that compromise their personal and sensitive information.

He emphasizes the need for collaboration between government entities and private companies that operate these facilities to establish robust data center security.

Strengthening U.S. data centers is vital, as they serve as repositories for crucial information.
