Rediscover your classic Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo game cartridges.
Analogue is revisiting the iconic console competition that shaped the gaming landscape of the early 1990s. Recently, the company unveiled the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+, enhanced iterations of its beloved Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis retro consoles. Each console is priced at $220, with shipments slated for December.
Similar to Analogue’s previous models, the Super Nt (2018) and Mega Sg (2019), these new consoles utilize FPGA technology. This approach replicates the original hardware on a single chip, eliminating the need for software emulation. The result is a seamless, lag-free experience for playing 16-bit games on contemporary televisions, all without the hassle of sourcing ROMs. users must provide their own original cartridges, making these systems akin to modern record players for vintage vinyl.
What Features Have Been Enhanced?
The standout hardware improvement is the addition of wireless controller capability. Both consoles are equipped with integrated Bluetooth and 2.4GHz support. Users will find a dedicated pairing button for connecting their preferred gamepads, and power management can be handled directly from the primary controller. While wired controllers remain compatible, keep in mind that no gamepads are included with the consoles. If you need controllers, consider purchasing 8BitDo’s retro-styled M30 and SN30 controllers, which retail for $30 each and match the aesthetics of Sega and Nintendo.
New features also include a USB-C power connection and a USB-A port. These can be used to connect to CRT displays or to charge controllers. An onboard SD card slot allows for additional functionality. The redesigned operating system and case design enhance usability. Notably, users can now swap cartridges without the need to power down the system.
Analogue reports that each console can play over 2,200 games, and they are region-free. The Mega Sg+ retains a connection for Sega CD and includes a Master System adapter. Video output supports up to 1080p, but there is no 4K capability.
Pre-orders for the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+ will open on Analogue’s website starting Monday, October 19, at 8 AM PT, priced at $220. Remember to account for additional controller costs if you don’t already own any. Shipping is anticipated to begin in December.
