Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Carrie has finally premiered, allowing fans to transition from eager anticipation to dissecting every intricate detail of this new interpretation of Stephen King’s classic. After viewing the finale, io9 had several questions, and interviews with Flanagan are now surfacing, providing insights into those queries.
For those who have watched all eight episodes, one shocking revelation is that Margaret White, Carrie’s excessively protective mother, possesses her own telekinetic powers, albeit much weaker than her daughter’s. Margaret herself acknowledges that her ability to “flex” is unlikely to manifest again.
In an interview with Collider, Flanagan highlighted that the concept of inherited telekinesis stems from Stephen King’s original work.
“We explored the genetic aspects of this … how genes express themselves, and we also discussed the dynamics between parents and teenagers today. Often, when there’s conflict, it’s because a parent sees something in their child that reflects their own unaddressed issues, which creates fear,” he explained.
Regarding Margaret’s powers, Flanagan stated, “Her abilities differ significantly from Carrie’s, whether due to intense suppression or the fact that they were never meant to develop as fully as Carrie’s. This allowed us to explore profound themes about motherhood, revealing that these two women, who have loved each other yet been in conflict throughout the story, share more similarities than they ever realized.”
Samantha Sloyan, who portrays Margaret, discussed this revelation in a separate interview with Deadline.
“I believe this aspect reflects the struggle of parents who desperately try to shield their children from the pain they experienced, sometimes inadvertently creating new traumas for them,” she remarked. “What I appreciated about this twist was how it grounded her decisions. She comprehends the reality of her powers. In the scene where the rocks fall, it’s clear that Margaret understands the situation. That’s the moment she decides, ‘Carrie will not leave this house because I know what the world does to monsters.’ This intensity is consistent throughout her character.”
Another significant deviation from King’s book and various adaptations of Carrie is that the protagonist, portrayed by Summer H. Howell, survives the events. Not only does she escape the fiery destruction of Chamberlain, but she also embarks on a new life.
In an interview with Inverse, Flanagan elaborated on his choice for this ending. He stated that he envisioned from the outset that his rendition of Carrie would survive. While he hopes Carrie will span three seasons, he also wanted to ensure the story had a fitting conclusion in case it was the last time audiences would see this version of the character.
“We needed to conclude in a way that, if the final scene of episode eight marked the end of this iteration of Carrie, it had to feel right. I wanted to send her off into the world we believed she deserved,” he noted.
Carrie is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
