She became suspicious when he closed the door behind him, claiming it was due to the school’s temperature.

Video evidence presented in court showed the student entering the classroom calmly before abruptly rushing out moments later. Williams was seen following him, holding a large knife and rubbing the back of her head. In her testimony, Williams expressed her fear of dying and the horror of possibly never seeing her daughter again. She described the look of “pure hatred” on the student’s face post-attack and emphasized that the violence was unexpected. According to the New York Post, the assault left Williams with a scalp injury, a 2.8-inch gash on her back, and defensive wounds on her hands.

In her victim statement, Williams discussed the emotional aftermath of the attack, revealing her struggles with sadness, anger, and guilt. She disclosed her intention to seek therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. “Sadness is the most prominent feeling; I dwell too much on what could have happened to me,” Williams shared. “I can hardly believe this has happened.”

In July, a jury acquitted the teen of attempted murder but found him guilty of wounding with intent and unlawful wounding. During the recent sentencing, a judge imposed a four-and-a-half-year sentence in a youth detention center. The student contested Williams’ account in court, claiming the assault was accidental and that she attempted to grab the knife from him. He also stated that he brought the knife as part of a game with friends, suggesting they competed to sneak the most absurd items into school.

Judge Addresses the Seriousness of the Attack

Judge Paul Thomas offered his perspective during the sentencing hearing, asserting his belief that the student had intended to inflict harm on Williams. He remarked that she was fortunate to have survived the incident without life-threatening injuries.

“It is clear to me that you brought a knife to school that day with the intention of causing real harm,” Judge Thomas stated, adding, “It was sheer luck that she did not sustain more severe, potentially fatal injuries.”
