Is there anyone who doesn’t love the Toy Story franchise? Pixar’s beloved animated series has captivated audiences since the original film debuted in 1995. This enchanting story follows a group of living toys, featuring Tom Hanks’ Sheriff Woody and Tim Allen’s Buzz Lightyear, who were originally owned by Andy Davis (John Morris). Together, they embark on unforgettable adventures that resonate with both children and adults alike. Crafted by talented filmmakers including John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Joe Ranft, the franchise has expanded to include three successful sequels—Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019)—with a fifth exciting film on the horizon. The first four movies received critical acclaim, achieved box office success, and collectively garnered numerous Academy Award nominations and wins, setting exceptionally high expectations for the upcoming installment.
Finally, fans received a teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 in November 2025, which introduces a new and intriguing threat to Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the beloved gang. The introduction of a groundbreaking piece of technology named Lilypad raises questions and challenges for the toys, forcing them to grapple with the implications of this new reality and what it means for their existence.
Much of the franchise’s remarkable success can be attributed to its iconic and diverse lineup of characters. In addition to Woody and Buzz, the films feature beloved characters such as Mr. Potato Head (originally voiced by Don Rickles), Mrs. Potato Head (Estelle Harris), Slinky Dog (Jim Varney and later Blake Clark), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Bo Peep (Annie Potts), and Jessie (Joan Cusack), among many others who have captured the hearts of fans. In Toy Story 5, the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head will be recast following the unfortunate deaths of Rickles and Harris, with new voice actors stepping in to continue their legacy and bring these character icons back to life.
Beyond the main films, the Toy Story universe has wonderfully expanded with spinoffs, including the Disney+ series Forky Asks a Question and the 2022 film Lightyear, which featured Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz Lightyear. Yet, fans are most eagerly anticipating Toy Story 5, which is set to delight audiences in theaters by 2026. Here’s everything you need to know about this highly anticipated sequel, filled with new adventures and heartwarming moments.
What Exciting Details Are Revealed About ‘Toy Story 5’?

On February 8, 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger officially confirmed during an investor call that a fifth Toy Story movie was in development, as reported by Deadline. However, at that time, specific details regarding the cast, plot, and precise release date remained largely undisclosed.
Since that announcement, Pixar has gradually unveiled significantly more information about the film. The storyline is set to take a more contemporary approach, concentrating on how toys struggle to maintain their relevance in a rapidly evolving world dominated by advanced technology. This time, the central conflict revolves around a smart device called Lilypad, which begins to distract Bonnie from her beloved toys, posing a new challenge for the characters.
Additionally, the film will shift its focus toward Jessie, who assumes a larger leadership role within the narrative. Woody, who left at the end of Toy Story 4, returns to the story, and Buzz Lightyear also makes his comeback, featuring various versions of the character that add an intriguing twist to the plot. New characters are being introduced, including Blaze, a confident new child character, and several technology-inspired toys. Notably, Conan O’Brien joins the cast as Smarty Pants, a quirky and outdated device, while Greta Lee lends her voice to Lilypad, bringing fresh energy to the storyline.
The film will also signify a transition for some classic characters. In light of the passing of Don Rickles and Estelle Harris, Toy Story 5 will recast the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head with new voice actors, ensuring their characters continue to be cherished by fans with the approval of their families.
Before the release of the fourth film in 2019, Tom Hanks mentioned on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that it would be his final time voicing Woody. “We were saying goodbye to Woody and Buzz…and it was emotional,” he expressed. This understandably saddened fans; however, producer Mark Nielsen initially hinted at the possibility of a fifth movie during Pixar’s press day for Toy Story 4. He stated, “Every film we make, we treat it like it’s the first and the last film we’re ever going to make, so you force yourself to make it hold up. You don’t get in over your skis. Whether there’s another one? I don’t know. If there is, it’s tomorrow’s problem.” Tim Allen also fueled fans’ hopes for Toy Story 5 when he confirmed in a 2019 interview that he would reprise his role as Buzz. “Once you’ve gotten to four, you’re past that trilogy [point], so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t do it, certainly. If you ask me, I’d say do five,” he shared, according to Cinemablend.
