XChat, the innovative standalone application designed for accessing X’s messaging capabilities, is now available for download on iOS. Initially, X indicated plans to remove direct messaging from its platform by 2025. However, for the time being, XChat remains accessible within the original X app, on the web, and through this newly launched application. This strategic decision allows users to continue utilizing messaging features while exploring the new app’s functionalities.
According to its launch video, the XChat app incorporates numerous modern messaging features that X has already rolled out in its chat functionalities. These include the options to delete and edit messages, prevent screenshot captures, and send disappearing messages. Additionally, the new XChat application facilitates video and audio calls, enhancing user interaction. X emphasizes that all communications made through XChat are protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring user privacy and security.
Furthermore, XChat is anticipated to serve as the new hub for any groups that previously formed under X’s Communities feature. Recently, the social media platform announced the retirement of Communities by the end of May and suggested that XChat‘s support for larger group conversations could provide a viable alternative. Currently, XChat’s group chats can accommodate up to 350 participants, with plans for future expansions to enhance this capacity.
Elon Musk’s initial vision after rebranding Twitter to X was to evolve the platform into an “everything app”, integrating features such as an algorithmic feed, messaging, job boards, and even payment systems all within a single platform. While launching a standalone messaging app may seem contrary to this vision, it reflects the current direction of X as it transitions into 2026. The company is now a subsidiary of xAI, which is affiliated with SpaceX. Musk’s focus on advancing AI technologies appears to be a major priority, potentially minimizing the urgency to replicate a model similar to WeChat.
