Jon Favreau’s Regret Over Tony Stark’s Fate in ‘Endgame’

The remarkable self-sacrifice of Tony Stark during the climactic battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame marked a poignant moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading to the departure of one of its most cherished heroes. Initially, Jon Favreau, who directed Robert Downey Jr. in his early two Iron Man films and co-starred as Happy Hogan throughout the MCU, had reservations about this narrative choice. However, after viewing the film’s poignant portrayal of Stark’s demise, he recognized that his initial hesitation was misplaced and the storytelling was powerful.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his latest cinematic venture, The Mandalorian and Grogu, Favreau reflected on his emotions at that time. He expressed a sense of protectiveness over the character and the extensive fan base that grew up alongside him, voicing his concerns to the film’s directors, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo.

“I spoke with the Russos; I mentioned, ‘I have doubts about how people will react… I really think this will deeply affect fans because many of them were children who grew up with that character,’” Favreau recounted. Nevertheless, he soon came to understand that his fears were unfounded.

“However, I must say, the way they handled it was exceptional. Additionally, Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. delivered outstanding performances, which added significant emotional weight to the scenes. They did a fantastic job, and I admit I was mistaken in my initial apprehensions,” he added.

Favreau also shared that he became “choked up” while watching those emotional sequences, expressing his enthusiasm for the anticipated return of Downey to the MCU, albeit this time portraying the menacing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, set to be released in December.
