Non-monogamy has gained significant traction in popular culture recently, with terms like open relationships and polyamory becoming increasingly visible across various online platforms. However, there is another intriguing concept that is starting to gain attention: relationship anarchy. This approach challenges traditional relationship norms and offers an alternative perspective on how we connect with others.
Relationship anarchy (often abbreviated as RA) is a philosophical framework that views all interpersonal connections as equally significant and distinctive. In the realm of RA, no relationship should be governed by rules that are not mutually accepted by all parties involved. The term was initially coined by writer and activist Andie Nordgren and aims to apply the principles of anarchism—which advocates for the dismantling of authority and hierarchical structures—to the domain of personal relationships.
Is Feeld for normies now?
Relationship anarchy has taken center stage in Feeld’s latest State of Dating Report, co-authored by renowned sex educator and author Ruby Rare. This report highlights that RA might serve as a remedy for the growing epidemic of loneliness experienced by Gen Z, showcasing how innovative relationship structures can foster deeper connections.
For many, feelings of loneliness have intensified, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a public advisory regarding the increasing loneliness epidemic in America. Experts suggest that Gen Z stands out as the loneliest generation, with significant implications for their mental and emotional well-being.

Interestingly, individuals who identify as relationship anarchists on the Feeld platform report experiencing significantly less loneliness and demonstrate a greater propensity to cherish both deep and broad interpersonal connections. Findings indicate that RA practitioners on the app are 1.5 times more likely to assert that a diverse array of connections mitigates feelings of loneliness. Furthermore, they are 31 percent more inclined to feel empowered to shape their relationships according to personal needs, and 20 percent more likely to possess a dependable support network, based on comprehensive surveys conducted with over 3,000 Feeld users and 6,000 non-users in February 2025.
The report emphasizes, “RA is one of several potential pathways to cultivate emotional depth and resilience while expanding your community: there is no universal solution.” This statement underscores the versatility and adaptability inherent in relationship styles, affirming that each individual can navigate their relational landscape in a way that resonates with their unique circumstances.
While relationship anarchy may not yet be as widely recognized as terms like non-monogamy, polyamory, or swinging, surveys reveal that one in five individuals who are not members of Feeld have come to realize that they have engaged in or are currently practicing a relationship style that aligns with RA principles. Among those actively using Feeld, this realization rises to an impressive one in two individuals.
However, like any relationship model, relationship anarchy presents its own set of challenges. In fact, negotiating relationship boundaries was reported to be 536 percent more difficult for RA members on Feeld compared to their non-RA counterparts. This discrepancy may stem from the absence of a predefined script for navigating RA—much like other non-monogamous frameworks. Additionally, individuals practicing RA were also found to be 96 percent more likely to face negative responses when prioritizing multiple partners over a singular focus on one partner. These hurdles reflect the broader difficulties that daters often encounter when striving for clear communication.
Interestingly, last year’s Feeld State of Dating Report revealed that Gen Z individuals also fantasize about traditional monogamous relationships (alongside elements of kink). This suggests that the quest for authentic connection remains nuanced and multifaceted, continually evolving within the modern dating landscape.
