Lindsay Dewey Advocates for Home Safety Awareness After Personal Tragedy
Two months ago, Lindsay Dewey faced an unimaginable tragedy when a devastating home accident led to the tragic loss of her 22-month-old son, Reed. The pain of reliving this heart-wrenching experience has been intense, yet she is determined to turn her grief into a powerful message about the dangers posed by unsecured heavy objects in homes. By sharing her story, she hopes to raise awareness and prevent other families from experiencing similar heartache.
In a heartfelt series of Instagram Stories, Lindsay shared the details of Reed’s story, expressing her anxiety about how the public would perceive her and her family. The internet can often be a harsh environment, filled with judgment and criticism. However, her resolve to share her experience stems from a desire to create positive change, even in the face of public scrutiny.
Despite her fears, Lindsay recognized the importance of her mission to raise awareness about securing household furnishings and heavy items like mirrors, which directly contributed to her tragic loss. The Perfect Storm of Tragedy: An Unforeseen Accident
While Lindsay can only speculate about the exact circumstances that led to the accident, she believes that Reed was attempting to pull a suction bowl cup off the mirror, which caused it to topple. This realization, shared through her Instagram Stories, highlights the unpredictable nature of household accidents and the importance of preventive measures.
At the time of the accident, Lindsay was merely ten feet away, preparing dinner, completely unaware of the impending tragedy. She described the shocking moment when she heard the mirror crash to the floor. Even then, silence surrounded her, leaving her unaware that Reed was beneath the fallen mirror until she lifted it, revealing the devastating reality.
I immediately knew something was VERY wrong and that it was critical
Even when she picked Reed up, he was silent and appeared uninjured. Initially relieved, Lindsay wrote, “I thought he must’ve been okay, just in shock or something… but no… he was not the Reed I knew.” The heart-wrenching realization began to sink in as she grappled with the situation.
Lindsay’s instinct told her something was terribly amiss. She shared that upon picking him up, “I immediately knew something was VERY wrong and that it was critical.” The gravity of the situation was unimaginable, as she reflected, “Never did we expect it to be so severe that he wouldn’t survive.”
She later learned that the mirror struck Reed’s head in a manner that caused a severe skull fracture, leading to a traumatic brain injury (TBI). This revelation underscored the hidden dangers that can exist in a seemingly safe home environment.
Lindsay recounted that the “Batalion chief said ‘it was the perfect storm’ of circumstances that led to this tragic incident.”

Raising Awareness: A Personal Mission to Prevent Future Accidents

After the incident, Lindsay recounted a moment of clarity when she put the mirror back against the wall and discovered Reed’s suction bowl stuck to it. She realized in that moment how the tragic accident unfolded, piecing together the events leading to that fateful day.
Describing the mirror, Lindsay explained, “It’s a heavy-duty mirror that leans against the wall.” It had been in place for over a year without any issues, leading them to believe it was secure despite the inherent risks associated with such items in a home with children.
“There’s no way our children are strong enough to move it, let alone pull it down on themselves,” she wrote, emphasizing that they had believed the urgency to anchor it was unnecessary. However, this tragic incident brought to light the critical need for safety measures in every aspect of home life.
She acknowledged that anchoring the mirror was on their to-do list. In fact, she stated, “Everything in our home is childproofed, but now we have to live with this for the rest of our lives.” This heart-wrenching realization underlines the importance of proactive safety measures that can prevent such tragedies.
Lindsay shared various childproofing measures they had implemented in their home, like window locks, gates, screens, and outlet covers. She expressed her pain, stating, “It hurts even more when it happens to a family like ours that tries so hard to protect our children… It’s not like we sit around being lazy when it comes to keeping our babies safe.”
“We just didn’t secure one major item, is what it boils down to.”
Through her experience, Lindsay hopes that by sharing her story, other parents will take a moment to reconsider their own home safety and preparedness measures. She wants to inspire others to take proactive steps to ensure that their homes are safe environments for their children.
“Be mindful of your suction utensils and toys around any furniture or mirrors, as well as anchoring heavy items, even if you think they won’t tip over,” she cautioned. “Apparently, they can.”

Facing Backlash: Standing Strong Amidst Criticism
In one of her posts, Lindsay conveyed her apprehension about sharing her story publicly, but felt a strong urge to reach out. “We didn’t owe anyone an explanation, and I know that,” she shared. “But I shared this just for awareness purposes.”
“We know we will be judged for this,” she wrote in another slide, “but anyone who spreads misinformation or has anything negative to say will simply be blocked. We have enough trauma and heartache as it is.”
“This should not have happened,” she continued. “Keep your opinions to yourselves, as this was clearly a quick and freak accident that could happen to anyone.”
Lindsay revealed that she and her family deliberated before deciding to share their story, regardless of potential backlash. “This could potentially save another child, and that makes all the backlash worth it,” she expressed with conviction.
“Anything you think or say about the situation won’t bring our baby back, so just remember that,” she wrote. “I have thick skin, so nothing you say is going to break me. My worst fear came true. Nothing scares me anymore.”

Family Impact: Navigating Grief Together
As responses began flooding in following Lindsay’s posts, she provided additional insight into that tragic day, including her last happy memory with Reed before the accident shattered their lives. Her story resonates deeply, highlighting the need for community support during such trying times.
She expressed her gratitude that her husband Eric was not in California at the time, as he commutes there for work. He was nearby, just down the street, while their other children were at home, providing a semblance of comfort amidst the chaos.
“The kids came running when they heard my reaction to seeing the mirror fall,” she recounted. “Sadly, they witnessed the entire incident.” Her daughter, in particular, became hysterical upon seeing the panic on Lindsay’s face. Fortunately, her other young son was too young to fully comprehend the situation unfolding around them.
Initially, Lindsay worried that her daughter might be traumatized by the experience due to her sensitivity. “By the grace of God, she has shown no signs of actual trauma,” Lindsay shared, thankful for her child’s resilience.
That was the last memory or image I have in my head of him when he was the Reed that we all knew
Lindsay shared that her children do remember the incident, as they have been heard saying things like, “I hate the mirror for hurting Reed” and “I’m sad that the mirror fell on Reed.” These remarks illustrate the lasting impact of the tragedy on the family.
She praised her husband for his swift response, returning home immediately — even before the paramedics arrived. “He knew exactly what to do to help him,” she recalled, noting that Eric quickly informed the medics of Reed’s condition, facilitating prompt and effective medical assistance.
Lindsay is grateful that Reed’s injuries appeared to be internal, as he “still looked like our normal, precious baby boy” on the outside. She expressed her inability to fathom how they would cope if he had visible injuries, which would have been a haunting image to carry.
