Meta’s strategies in artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) development reveal a complex and often contradictory stance, as reflected in its internal communications and public statements over time.
On one side of this dichotomy, Meta is aggressively incorporating generative AI technologies across its platforms, enthusiastically prompting users to create images and obtain answers to questions they may not have previously considered through its innovative AI tools.
Conversely, Meta has expressed concerns about the potential hazards of such technologies, emphasizing the need for users to remain vigilant against AI-generated content that may increasingly resemble actual real-world recordings.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has been vocal about these warnings, stating in a recent post on Threads that:
“Whether or not you’re a bull or a bear in the technology, generative AI is clearly producing content that is difficult to discern from recordings of reality, and improving rapidly.”
Mosseri asserts that Meta must take proactive steps to label AI-generated content as accurately as possible. However, he also recognizes the critical importance of individual responsibility when it comes to evaluating such material as it appears in real-time.
“It’s going to be increasingly critical that the viewer, or reader, brings a discerning mind when they consume content purporting to be an account or a recording of reality. My advice is to *always* consider who it is that is speaking.”
Yet, Mosseri understands the reality that most users may not engage in this careful consideration. History has shown that social media hoaxes often gain momentum, leading to a scenario where fundamental scientific truths, such as the Earth being a sphere, face increasing skepticism compared to previous eras.
While it’s easy for Mosseri to advocate for heightened user vigilance, he is acutely aware that many individuals will not take the necessary precautions, which raises the potential for generative AI to create significant societal harm through social platforms.
Despite this awareness, Meta is steadfast in its pursuit of more AI-generated content.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently articulated his expectation that the majority of content shared on Facebook and Instagram will be predominantly AI-generated in the near future. This vision is driving Meta to integrate an increasing number of AI creation tools into its applications.
Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, is equally enthusiastic about advancing AI capabilities, indicating that the evolution of AI is paving the way for future innovations, and that Meta intends to accelerate its development efforts significantly.
Nevertheless, the long-term impacts of this shift remain uncertain.
For instance, the potential dangers posed by AI-generated misinformation and manipulation are still largely unknown. While Meta recently observed that the anticipated surge of AI-generated content during the U.S. elections did not materialize, this does not eliminate the risk that AI fakes could distort public perception in the future.
Moreover, concerning the deployment of AI companions and conversational AI in products like Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, we must question the real dangers associated with individuals prioritizing interaction with AI over authentic human connections.
The risks here mirror those posed by social media itself, a topic that has only recently come under scrutiny. Governments are now beginning to restrict access to social media for younger users due to concerns about detrimental behaviors. Additionally, there is growing pressure from regulators and security officials to eliminate foreign-owned social applications due to fears they might manipulate public sentiment.
These examples represent just a fraction of the potential harms attributed to social media, and this possibility has spurred significant government action. Yet, it has taken years to reach this stage of discourse, where we are actively considering these as hazardous activities.
Initially, social media was viewed as a novelty, a harmless distraction primarily for younger generations. However, that perception has dramatically shifted.
Today, AI and VR technologies are being evaluated with similar skepticism.
While it’s important to acknowledge that technological advancement is not inherently negative, Meta’s stance fluctuates significantly—from raising alarms about potential dangers to promoting widespread participation in these technologies.
Ultimately, what we truly need is a proactive evaluation of potential consequences before we dive too deep into these technologies, rather than waiting until after the fact. Once a billion users are immersed in VR environments and engaging with customized AI chatbots, the ramifications will become glaringly apparent. Unfortunately, by then, it may already be too late to address the issues.
