After a series of delays, Paramount is finally fulfilling its long-standing commitment to provide Michelle Yeoh with her very own Star Trek adventure. The upcoming series, Section 31, places the complex character of Philippa Georgiou—previously portrayed as an antagonist—at the forefront. The latest trailer highlights not only the intense action sequences but also the eclectic group of misfits who will join her on this thrilling journey through the Star Trek universe.
Directed by Star Trek: Discovery producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi, the series picks up with Georgiou leading a seemingly peaceful life in the prime universe. She now owns a lavish club located on a space station that lies outside the jurisdiction of the Federation. However, her tranquil existence is disrupted when Section 31 agent Alok, played by Omari Hardwick, arrives with a recruitment proposal for the covert operations division. Their mission? Tackle a looming threat that the Federation is unable to confront directly. Meanwhile, Starfleet officer Rachel Garrett, portrayed by Kacey Rohl, is tasked with keeping the team in check, but Georgiou and her newly-formed crew are ready to embrace the chaos that lies ahead.
The crew is an intriguing mix of characters, including Changeoid spy Quasi (played by Sam Richardson), the formidable exosuit-wearing Zeph (portrayed by Robert Kazinsky), cunning honeypot expert Melle (played by Humberly Gonzalez), and the hot-headed Fuzz (played by Sven Ruygrok). While the initial trailer presented a glamorous view of their exploits, the new footage reveals the team actively utilizing their unique skills in perilous situations—ranging from dramatic club shootouts to intense dogfights. They emphasize the necessity of collaboration for survival. However, the moral ambiguities and darker themes hinted at in previous Star Trek narratives have yet to fully surface. Given Georgiou’s complicated past as an Emperor in her original universe, it’s reasonable to expect that deeper, more sinister elements may be lurking beneath the explosive action.
Fans will have the opportunity to delve into the complexities of Star Trek: Section 31 when it premieres on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025.
