On Thursday, Samsung made headlines by launching the world’s first 27-inch 4K gaming OLED monitor, a groundbreaking move that predicted a wave of competition in the market. Engadget’s Igor Bonifacic speculated that other manufacturers would quickly join in, especially considering Samsung’s position as the leading supplier of OLED gaming monitor panels. True to this expectation, MSI announced its own offerings on the same day at CES 2025, featuring two impressive monitors that boast similar specifications: a 27-inch 4K QD-OLED display alongside a 27-inch QD-OLED model that delivers an astonishingly smooth 500Hz refresh rate, setting new standards for gaming performance.
The first model, the MPG 272URX QD-OLED, is a 27-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor that MSI has expertly marketed. This monitor stands out as the first to integrate DisplayPort 2.1a technology, which enhances the synergy between resolution and frame rates, pushing the boundaries of visual excellence. Mirroring Samsung’s offering (the G81SF), it features a robust 240Hz refresh rate, ensuring that gamers will enjoy a visually stunning experience with a crisp 166 PPI display. This combination of features positions the MPG 272URX as a top contender in the gaming monitor arena.
According to MSI, this advanced panel “significantly reduces color fringing,” which is a common issue in many QD-OLED screens and can negatively impact text clarity. As highlighted by my colleague Igor, this monitor could serve as the ultimate all-in-one solution for various uses, whether for gaming, professional work, or other demanding applications. Its versatility and high performance make it an appealing choice for users looking to maximize their display capabilities.
Moreover, the MPG 272URX QD-OLED is compatible with NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology, ensuring that users experience smooth, tear-free gameplay, a crucial feature for competitive gaming. This monitor’s innovation and quality were recognized at CES 2025, where it proudly received an Innovation Award, further solidifying its status as an industry leader.
MSI’s second offering, the 27-inch QHD QD-OLED model, carries the catchy name MPG 272QR QD-OLED X50, designed specifically for mainstream gamers. With a lower resolution of 2,560 x 1,440, this monitor aims to attract a wider audience without sacrificing performance. It also utilizes DisplayPort 2.1a technology and boasts an impressive 0.03ms gray-to-gray pixel response time, ensuring rapid image rendering. Additionally, it has achieved VESA ClearMR 21000 certification, which minimizes motion blur, allowing gamers to fully immerse themselves in the action with its blistering 500Hz refresh rate.
As of now, MSI has not disclosed any information regarding the pricing or release dates for either of these remarkable models, leaving enthusiasts eagerly anticipating further details.
