Yesterday, Magic: The Gathering launched the Zeta Set, a collaborative effort with the art collective MSCHF, via its Secret Lair online retail platform. the release faced significant challenges, prompting publisher Wizards of the Coast to issue an apology, labeling the situation as “a disaster.” “There’s no other way to say it,” the apology states on Magic‘s website. “We’re incredibly sorry for the experience, and we’re working to understand what went wrong.”
Fan dissatisfaction with Secret Lair releases is not a new phenomenon. The transition from a print-on-demand model—where Wizards of the Coast printed as many copies of each set as were ordered within a designated timeframe—to limited print runs of each set has led to frustrations. These limited editions often sell out rapidly, resulting in scalpers acquiring the inventory and reselling it at exorbitant prices. This shift has created a growing discontent among Magic players and has drawn criticism towards Wizards of the Coast. Typically, however, the discontent does not reach a level that necessitates an apology from the company.
Regarding the specifics of what transpired, even Wizards of the Coast appears to lack clarity. Approximately forty minutes after the launch, Secret Lair announced via its X account that it had temporarily halted sales to investigate unspecified technical problems. Fans reported various issues on social media, including problems with the queue system, challenges in placing orders, a lack of order confirmations, and random order cancellations. After an hour and a half, the sale resumed, but all items quickly sold out.
In their apology, Wizards of the Coast outlined “a number of possible issues” that customers may have encountered, including:
- If you’re uncertain whether you completed an order but think you might have, we’re actively working through those inquiries.
- If you received a duplicate confirmation email, there’s no need for concern.
- If you haven’t received a confirmation email within 24 hours but believe you purchased the Zeta Set, please contact our Customer Support team for assistance. We’re experiencing a high volume of inquiries and are addressing them as promptly as possible.
Wizards of the Coast did not specify any potential remedies or compensation for customers impacted by these technical difficulties but assured that they would “share as much information as possible” once they resolve the situation.
