CES 2025: The Rise of Innovative Flying Cars is Here!
This year at the renowned consumer tech showcase, we had the opportunity to explore Xpeng Aero HT’s revolutionary Land Aircraft Carrier, stepping inside the cockpit of their cutting-edge modular eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing, for those unfamiliar). Imagine an electric vehicle that seamlessly transitions from highway cruising to soaring through the skies; it’s a groundbreaking concept that truly embodies the spirit of CES.
CES 2025 highlights: What we’ve seen so far
To clarify, the impressive six-wheeled vehicle isn’t technically a flying car. Xpeng’s “Mothership” resembles a futuristic minivan, reminiscent of the Cybertruck, but it remains grounded. However, it does transport a two-seater eVTOL aircraft that takes to the air. This innovative design is undeniably captivating. After a discussion with co-founder and CEO Wang Tan, it became clear that Xpeng is fully committed to empowering drivers with the “freedom to fly,” revolutionizing personal transportation.

While we couldn’t explore the interior of the Mothership—being a near-final prototype—we had the chance to sit in the two-person aircraft. During our time there, Tan explained their mission: to simplify the experience of flying. The cockpit features a minimalistic design, utilizing a one-handed joystick for navigation, automated flight systems for short self-guided journeys, and backup controls conveniently located on the center console, ensuring an intuitive flying experience for users.

Before you envision yourself gliding through bustling cityscapes, it’s important to temper those expectations. Xpeng sees the eVTOL primarily as a vehicle for recreational adventures, deliberately distanced from crowded urban environments. Let’s face it—most drivers struggle with navigating two-dimensional roads; mastering the complexities of three-dimensional flight is an entirely different challenge. Additionally, potential pilots will require a Light Sport Aircraft license to operate the eVTOL.
The Mothership and eVTOL combination boasts an impressive combined range of 1,000 kilometers, equating to just over 620 miles. What’s particularly innovative is that the EV serves as a mobile charging station for the eVTOL, enhancing their functionality. Together, they signify Xpeng’s ambitious “Phase 1” in realizing the dream of personal flight. As for Phase 2? They aim to develop a car that can actually take to the skies.
Currently, Xpeng has amassed over 3,000 intent orders and aims to begin deliveries in China by 2026. But be prepared for a hefty investment; the Land Aircraft Carrier is projected to retail at around $300,000.
After all, the future of transportation comes at a price!
