Wrongful Death Lawsuit Targets Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google

A new lawsuit seeks to hold social media giants accountable for their alleged detrimental effects on young users. The Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC) has initiated a personal injury and wrongful death lawsuit against Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google. This legal action claims that these companies have developed addictive and hazardous products that contributed to the tragic deaths of four children.

The lawsuit asserts that these platforms have “ignored repeated warnings from their own researchers, concealed evidence of harm, and created systems that profile minors during periods of psychological vulnerability.” The SMVLC further alleges that the companies monitored user behaviors to promote specific content, including “diet and beauty advertisements, appearance-altering filters, and social comparison features,” which led to increased instances of “depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts,” all in pursuit of greater user engagement. The incidents connected to this lawsuit occurred between July 2024 and September 2025 across Texas, North Carolina, Minnesota, and Tennessee. The lawsuit was filed in Delaware after internal documents from these companies were revealed in recent state and federal court proceedings.

A spokesperson for Google stated, “Providing young people with a safer, healthier experience has always been at the core of our mission. In partnership with mental health and parenting experts, we have developed services and policies to ensure age-appropriate experiences for young users and comprehensive controls for parents. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and are currently reviewing the claims in this lawsuit.”

To this latest lawsuit, these platforms are facing multiple similar legal challenges. Earlier this summer, four U.S. states filed a lawsuit against Meta, alleging that both Facebook and Instagram have addictive designs and have misrepresented the safety of these apps to the public. Just a month prior, Meta, Snap, and TikTok each settled an individual lawsuit concerning social media addiction that was initiated by a Kentucky school district.
