One of the most rewarding aspects of leading programming at Apple TV is basking in the spotlight of acclaim, as evidenced by the recent wave of Emmy nominations for standout series like Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, Shrinking, and others. this recognition brings its own challenges, particularly when fans and the media eagerly inquire about upcoming seasons of these beloved shows.
Among the most anticipated is Severance, which concluded its gripping second season in March 2025, leaving viewers on a tantalizing cliffhanger. In a recent conversation with Variety following the Emmy nominations, Apple TV’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss, provided a status update—albeit without specific dates.
While Cherniss couldn’t confirm an exact premiere for Severance season three, he expressed optimism, stating, “We’re making great progress and are approaching production. We’ve reviewed much of the material, and I believe it will resonate with the audience. For a series like Severance, it’s crucial to uphold the standard set by the first two seasons, and we aim to elevate it even further.”
“Nearing production” is certainly encouraging, especially considering the lengthy wait viewers experienced between seasons one and two, the first of which premiered in February 2022.
What about Pluribus, which aired its season one finale in December 2025? Once again, Cherniss refrained from providing a timeline, even regarding the anticipated year of 2028. He emphasized that, similar to Severance, the creative process for Pluribus cannot be rushed. “Vince [Gilligan, the creator of Pluribus] is ambitious with season two and is taking the necessary time to ensure that the show meets everyone’s expectations,” Cherniss noted. “It’s also a complex series in terms of execution and production, but we’re starting to see early drafts, and progress is being made.”
Now, let’s turn to Widow’s Bay season two. Given that the horror comedy hit’s first season just concluded a few weeks ago and the renewal announcement is fresh, we can afford a bit more patience. Yet, our anticipation is palpable.
“Well, Cheryl Eddy Katie [Dippold] is expected to take a well-deserved break,” Cherniss remarked. “I know she’s already brainstorming ideas for season two and plans to dive into it as soon as possible. We’re on it, and we understand the audience’s eagerness for more episodes, so we will strive to expedite the process. The show is a true labor of love, filmed in a location [in Massachusetts] that presents its own challenges. Certain factors do influence the production timeline, but everyone is working diligently to keep things moving.”
There you have it. Cherniss acknowledges the audience’s appetite for more content. We will continue to monitor for any updates, no matter how small, until the new seasons of Severance, Pluribus, and Widow’s Bay are finally released.
