In 2016, Yeon Sang-ho’s groundbreaking film Train to Busan revitalized the zombie genre by delivering a unique blend of thrilling action and emotional depth. This cinematic masterpiece not only captivated audiences but also inspired an animated prequel and a highly anticipated sequel. The excitement surged further when news broke about an American adaptation titled The Last Train to New York, officially slated for release in 2023. Fans of the original were eager to see how this new version would interpret the gripping narrative.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding The Last Train to New York, which at one time had renowned filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto (May the Devil Take You, Nobody 2) on board as director and screenwriter Gary Dauberman (It, It Chapter Two) crafting the script, the project has yet to gain momentum. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer James Wan revealed that while The Last Train to New York remains a “passion project” for his company, Atomic Monster, it currently appears to be on the back burner, with no clear timeline for development.
“Everything about it is really exciting,” Wan expressed. “I hope that we can eventually get it off the ground. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure where it stands right now.”
If The Last Train to New York comes to fruition, it seems that horror enthusiasts can anticipate a fresh reimagining rather than a straightforward remake. However, it’s expected that the thrilling concept of “zombies on the subway” will remain a central theme within the storyline, promising to deliver the same heart-pounding tension that fans loved in the original.
“Creatively, it takes place in the same world as Train to Busan,” Wan shared with EW. “[The zombie outbreak is] The epidemic is sweeping across the globe. So while Train to Busan captures a specific narrative in South Korea, we envision Train to New York as the American counterpart.”
In recent times, the zombie genre has experienced a resurgence, with films like 28 Years Later making waves in theaters. Yet, the track record of American remakes of foreign horror films has been inconsistent, leading to mixed reactions among fans. Still, The Last Train to New York holds potential as an intriguing project. Are you among the hopeful fans eagerly anticipating its eventual debut?
