Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey is poised for a monumental box office debut this weekend.
‘The Odyssey’ Review: Christopher Nolan Transforms a Timeless Myth into Cinematic Brilliance
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Odyssey generated an impressive $17.6 million during its domestic Thursday night previews and is projected to reach a staggering $117 million by the end of the opening weekend. This achievement would mark the highest domestic opening for a live-action film this year, outdoing Michael, which earned $97 million and went on to surpass the $1 billion mark globally in July. The top two domestic openings of the year are attributed to animated films: Toy Story 5 ($160 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131.7 million).
If The Odyssey secures a $117 million opening, it will set a new record for the best opening weekend for an R-rated film in 2026, surpassing Backrooms, which debuted with $81.4 million. it would represent Universal Pictures’ highest opening for an R-rated film, previously held by Fifty Shades of Grey at $85.1 million.

The opening weekend for The Odyssey is also expected to exceed that of Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, which debuted at $82.4 million. This would make The Odyssey Nolan’s largest opening since The Dark Knight Rises, which remains dominant with a $160 million opening.
Considering the reported production budget of $250 million and marketing expenses of $125 million, Forbes estimates that The Odyssey will need to generate between $625 million and $750 million to break even after theater cuts. Nonetheless, given Nolan’s impressive history, The Odyssey is likely to maintain strong box office performance, particularly in premium formats like IMAX 70mm. Tickets for this format are already sold out for weeks, a trend that has persisted since sales began last year.
The evident demand for The Odyssey raises the question: Could this film become Nolan’s third to eclipse the $1 billion mark, following the successes of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises?
The Odyssey is currently showing in theaters.
