The Best Choice by Far: Why It Stands Out

The Transformers movie expertly employs a three-act structure, although the effectiveness of each act varies. I firmly believe that the first act, which serves as the setup, is nearly flawless. It establishes the setting just outside Autobot City while introducing characters like Daniel and Hot Rod, and it quickly moves into exhilarating battle sequences. For the first 25 minutes, viewers are treated to cinematic brilliance. We witness a cunning ambush orchestrated by Megatron, Hot Rod recognizing the ruse, the Constructicons merging into the formidable Devastator, and finally, Optimus Prime and the Dinobots making a dramatic entrance. The climax features an epic showdown between the leaders of the two rival Cybertronian factions. Every moment is packed with intensity, yet the film manages to include memorable scenes, such as Kup sharing his veteran wisdom and Blaster gathering more energy in one scene than most main characters do throughout an entire series.

Among the highlights, we experience what could be the most thrilling action sequence in Transformers history. When Optimus declares, “Megatron must be stopped,” audiences know that chaos is imminent. The Autobot leader bulldozes through half of the Decepticon army before dispatching the remaining foes with a single strike, culminating in a signature pose that would be replicated in numerous adaptations later on. Current filmmakers could glean valuable lessons from the choreography of this scene. The act concludes with the heartbreaking death of Optimus Prime, a moment so impactful that Hasbro has continued to apologize for it four decades later.

One notable shortcoming of the first act is what it fails to include. Some script drafts featured Metroplex, a crucial component of Autobot City, which would have elevated the film as the ultimate showcase of the G1 cartoon. Unfortunately, due to potential miscommunication and likely budget constraints, that storyline was omitted. This omission is regrettable, as it could have significantly enhanced the narrative surrounding the transformation of Autobot City during the Decepticon assault. Given the numerous continuity errors and the physics-defying moments present in both the Transformers movie and the G1 cartoon, fans who have followed the franchise for years likely won’t be surprised by this oversight.

As the story progresses, things start to veer into the bizarre. The Autobots are forced to escape Earth, with Hot Rod, Kup, and the Dinobots heading in one direction while Ultra Magnus, Arcee, Springer, Daniel, and others travel in another, all while being pursued by Galvatron and the Decepticons. This segment is significant as it illustrates Hot Rod’s character development while depicting Ultra Magnus’s struggle to step into Optimus Prime’s role. there are somewhat excessive tangents and side adventures, making the film’s middle feel somewhat disjointed.

The Junkions, while providing comic relief, may have pushed the boundaries of campiness. Nevertheless, I admire their commitment to 1980s-style dialogue. The casting of Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar was a brilliant choice, but the appearance of the giant robot squid and the Quintessons felt rather unexpected, even though Hot Rod and the Dinobots’ journey to Quintessa did lead to some amusing moments with Snarl.

As the third act unfolds, Unicron reveals his true form, prompting the Autobots and Decepticons to unite in defense of Cybertron. While I appreciate how the film concludes, it is evident that the pacing feels rushed. I always wished for more screen time showcasing the Dinobots’ ferocity and cameos from beloved characters like Bumblebee and Jazz, who were sidelined early in the film. My greatest desire was for an extended confrontation between Rodimus and Galvatron. The film excels in depicting the transfer of the Matrix to Hot Rod, yet after his transformation, he defeats Galvatron in just two moves. If you blink, you might miss it. That moment should have been the climactic triumph before Unicron’s explosion, serving as a fitting reward for our new leader’s journey. it appears that Hasbro prioritized maintaining a brisk runtime of just one hour and 25 minutes.
