Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology is poised to launch in Europe, beginning with the Netherlands. This significant milestone has been confirmed by Tesla Europe, which announced that the advanced driver assistance system has received official approval in the Netherlands. The RDW, the nation’s vehicle regulatory authority, communicated this development through an announcement on its website, indicating that Tesla has successfully obtained a type approval for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system, which sets the stage for its upcoming rollout.
As stated by the RDW, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system underwent rigorous examination and extensive testing for over a year and a half, conducted both on specialized test tracks and public roads. This thorough evaluation led to the conclusion that the system represents a positive contribution to enhancing road safety. However, the RDW emphasized that vehicles equipped with the FSD Supervised technology are not classified as “self-driving.” It is crucial for the driver to remain vigilant and in control at all times, ensuring safety while utilizing the advanced features.
With the recent approvals from the Netherlands, Tesla has achieved its first regulatory endorsement for the use of FSD in Europe. The RDW also mentioned that Tesla’s FSD Supervised could potentially gain acceptance in all European Union member states, thanks to this pivotal approval. Tesla has been actively pursuing the introduction of its automated driving features in various regions, including Europe and China, as outlined in a roadmap set for 2024. Meanwhile, Tesla’s software is currently under scrutiny due to several safety investigations led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The most recent investigation focuses on collisions associated with the use of FSD, including the supervised variant, particularly in low-visibility conditions.
