This yr is already off to an excellent begin on the motion pictures however 2025 is trying even larger, in additional methods than one. Recent off the large success of final yr’s Oppenheimer and this yr’s Dune: Half Two, IMAX simply revealed 14 titles in 2025 that won’t solely be launched in IMAX, however are being filmed particularly for the format.
The listing, to this point, is as follows:
- Captain America: Courageous New World – February 15, 2025
- Untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan – March 7, 2025
- Thunderbolts – Could 2, 2025
- Flowervale Road – Could 16, 2025
- Mission: Inconceivable 8 – Could 23, 2025
- How To Practice Your Dragon – June 13, 2025

- Blade – November 7, 2025

In fact, as these movies are all to this point out, launch dates are topic to alter and there’ll most likely be extra movies utilizing IMAX cameras within the coming months. (Additionally, why isn’t Avatar 3 on this listing? Did Cameron not use IMAX cameras? What about Gareth Edwards and Jurassic World?)
Now, for actual movie nerds, you all have one query proper now. Since all of those movies are being “filmed in IMAX,” will they simply be launched in regular, larger, 1.9:1 IMAX? Or will any of them be full-frame, Christopher Nolan/Denis Villeneuve 1.43:1 IMAX? io9 reached out to IMAX for readability and was advised since most of those movies are nonetheless in manufacturing, they couldn’t affirm what every movie is utilizing or what format every shall be launched in. It’s just too early to make certain.
However let’s have some enjoyable and guess anyway.
As not one of the Marvel motion pictures have ever gone 1.43, you’ll be able to most likely cross all these off the listing. Similar for the opposite Disney film, Tron. Coogler/Jordan is rumored to be a interval vampire film, which sounds wonderful, however perhaps not “1.43 IMAX” wonderful. Flowervale Street is rumored to be about dinosaurs and David Robert Mitchell is an thrilling filmmaker, however I’m nonetheless considering “No” there. Mission: Inconceivable 8 is an actual chance for the reason that format has been used within the franchise, plus that is rumored to be the tip of the saga so it could be a pleasant enhance. I doubt Learn how to Practice Your Dragon would because it’s a household movie however, you by no means know. The Joseph Kosinski-Brad Pitt System One film, with its rumored $300 million funds, looks like the obvious one to make use of the 1.43 facet ratio, adopted carefully by James Gunn’s Superman. That might set an thrilling precedent for the beginning of the DC Universe, if true. Mercy is an Amazon film so, most likely not that, after which there’s The Bride!, which we’re in fact enthusiastic about however appears a bit extra private than epic. However once more, that’s all simply hypothesis.
It doesn’t matter what the case although, even when not one of the movies go the complete Nolan, simply filming for IMAX does give the display screen a major bounce in dimension, to not point out the unbelievable sound. Out of the entire premium codecs on the market, it’s actually my favourite, and one of the crucial worthwhile for studios too.
