Tragic Murder Case: 16-Year-Old Miranda Corsette’s Body Found in Dumpster After Alleged Torture Over Missing Ring
New and shocking details have surfaced regarding the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Miranda Corsette, a 16-year-old teenage mother who reportedly fled from home. Unfortunately, she is believed to have fallen victim to a gruesome murder and dismemberment at the hands of a man and his girlfriend, all due to a missing ring—a ring that might not have even been lost. The couple is said to have met Miranda through an online dating app, leading to a week of horrifying abuse.
Investigators now suspect that during the period between Corsette’s murder and the eventual disposal of her remains in a dumpster near the grandparents’ residence of one of the suspects, the couple allegedly celebrated a birthday party. This disturbing revelation raises questions about their state of mind during such a heinous act.

According to a documented search warrant request from the St. Petersburg Police Department, obtained by The Tampa Bay Times, it is alleged that Steven Gress, 35, and Michelle Brandes, 37, spent time celebrating Brandes’ birthday immediately after Corsette’s tragic death.
The records suggest that the couple dined at Popeyes and played mini-golf at Congo River in Clearwater. Following these seemingly normal activities, they allegedly drove around the greater Tampa Bay area in search of a location to dispose of Corsette’s remains.
Ultimately, authorities believe they chose a dumpster close to Gress’ grandparents’ home in Ruskin; it is significant to note that Corsette had been living with her grandparents at the time of her disappearance, with her grandmother previously informing police of the teenager’s frequent runaway behavior.
The St. Petersburg Police Department suspects that the alleged murderers were fortunate with their choice of dumpster, as investigative findings indicate it was later transported to a landfill where its contents were incinerated, thus complicating the discovery of Corsette’s remains.
As a result, Corsette’s remains have yet to be located, yet the prosecution is diligently moving forward with its case against Gress and Brandes, seeking justice for the young victim.

Life of Abuse: The Disturbing Behavior of the Alleged Murderers
In their pursuit of justice, prosecutors and investigators have reached out to at least six individuals, as reported by Fox affiliate WTVT, who allege that the couple was known to have abused Corsette throughout the week she was under their control, or that they were aware of the abuse taking place.
Numerous neighbors have reportedly informed authorities that Gress openly discussed Corsette, even boasting about inflicting harm upon her. To one neighbor, he allegedly remarked, “This little bitch stole my ring and won’t give it back, so I’ve been beating her ass.” This chilling admission raises serious concerns about the couple’s violent tendencies.
Additionally, Gress allegedly sent nude images of Corsette to at least three people, including his own mother, showcasing her deteriorating condition and increasing injuries. Although his mother denied receiving these images, police are pursuing a warrant to obtain the contents of her phone. Disturbingly, none of the individuals contacted about Corsette’s situation reported the abuse to authorities.
A woman who reportedly lived with Gress and Brandes revealed to investigators that Gress had a troubling history of abusive behavior. According to the arrest warrant, this individual claimed he would go so far as to purchase animals from Craigslist only to kill them by throwing them off a bridge, indicating a severe lack of empathy.
The roommate also shared information regarding the alleged missing ring, which authorities believe served as a catalyst for Gress’s abusive actions toward Corsette. Notably, Brandes appeared with the ring during the period of torture, leading the roommate to suspect that she had always possessed it and feigned its absence to incite Gress into harming the teenager.
Despite the numerous witnesses that police have consulted regarding their investigation, Sixth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bruce Bartlett informed the Times that no further arrests have been made yet, but he indicated a “fairly good chance of more to come” as the case unfolds.

Chronology of Events Leading to Miranda Corsette’s Death
On February 24, Miranda’s grandmother reported her granddaughter missing. During the investigation, detectives uncovered that Corsette initially contacted Gress through the online dating app Grindr on Valentine’s Day, which ultimately led to her tragic fate.
It was determined that she had agreed to meet him at his residence, returned home, and then went back to his place again, but this time she did not come back.
Corsette’s grandmother stated that the teenager frequently returned home, so she typically did not report her missing every time she left. “She just didn’t come back in a timely manner this time,” Farrand informed the press, emphasizing Corsette’s history of running away.
Authorities suspect that Corsette had been staying with Gress and his partner, Brandes, since their initial meeting; however, on February 20, things escalated dramatically. Allegedly, a dispute erupted, leading to her brutal beating, all stemming from the issue of the missing ring, as reported by NDTV.
According to the arrest affidavit released on Saturday and reviewed by NDTV, Corsette was allegedly held captive for over seven days and subjected to horrifying torture. During this harrowing period, Gress and Brandes reportedly beat the young girl and ultimately suffocated her by forcing a billiard ball into her mouth while wrapping her face with plastic.
After her death, authorities reported that Gress transported Corsette’s body in a vehicle and drove approximately 15 miles to a residence in Largo, owned by Brandes’ mother. Evidence collected from this location led police to conclude that Corsette’s remains were likely dismembered there, according to the official release.
It was after the dismemberment of her body that Gress and Brandes allegedly took time to celebrate Brandes’ birthday before proceeding to Gress’ grandparents’ residence to dispose of Corsette’s remains in a dumpster.

Charges Filed Against the Couple for Murder and Kidnapping
Miranda Corsette’s remains were reportedly discarded on March 7 in Hillsborough County, Florida, nearly two weeks after her grandmother initially reported her missing. The tragic circumstances of her disappearance have drawn widespread attention and concern.
During a press conference held on March 7, Commander Mary Farrand, acting police chief for Gulfport, stated that the department was “very familiar” with Corsette due to her history as a “frequent runaway” and her struggles with mental health issues and drug abuse.
At the time of the charges, both suspects were charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. Authorities reported that Gress was already in custody on an unrelated drug charge and for allegedly aiming a harpoon at Brandes. She surrendered to the police the following day, as outlined in a press release from the St. Petersburg Police Department.
During his first court appearance, Gress allegedly remarked to the judge after the charges were read, “They just said I suffocated—” according to reports from NBC affiliate WFLA. His public defender quickly interrupted him, advising him not to say anything further.
He also inquired about his co-defendant, as captured in video shared by Fox affiliate WTVT, repeatedly asking, “Where is Michelle Brandes?” He was merely instructed by the judge, “Speak to your lawyer,” highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Both suspects are currently being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond, as the judicial process continues to unfold.
