The talented retired American actress P.J. Soles gained significant recognition at the age of 26 when she captivated audiences with her unforgettable portrayal of Riff Randell. Riff is characterized as the spirited rocker chick and fiercely loyal friend in the iconic film “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School”, which premiered in 1979. This role not only showcased Soles’ acting prowess but also solidified her status as a cultural icon of the 1970s, particularly within the realm of teen comedies. The film, celebrated for its energetic music and rebellious spirit, resonated with the youth of that era, and Soles’ performance was a pivotal part of its success.
P.J. Soles truly stole the spotlight in her role, sharing the screen with notable co-stars such as Vince Van Patten, who played the charming and popular star-quarterback Tom Roberts, a character determined to win Riff’s heart. Additionally, she starred alongside Dey Young, who portrayed Riff’s best friend and the quintessential nerdy bookworm, eagerly vying for Tom’s affections. The film also featured Kate Rambeau and Mary Woronov in memorable roles, with Woronov playing the strict and cruel Miss Togar, who harbored a strong disdain for rock music. Together, these characters created a dynamic narrative that highlighted the generational clash between rock music and traditional values.
In addition to her role in “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School”, P.J. Soles is also well-remembered for her portrayal of Lynda van der Klok in the iconic horror film “Halloween”, directed by John Carpenter.
