The beloved film What We Do in the Shadows has successfully transitioned into a TV series, and now the creative minds behind it are embarking on a new project titled Very Young Frankenstein. This series, positioned as a prequel to the iconic 1974 Mel Brooks comedy featuring Gene Wilder, has officially been greenlit by FX.
According to Deadline’s report, this FX and Hulu collaboration involves the talents of WWDITS creators Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garret Basch. Mel Brooks himself joins the project as an executive producer. Robinson crafted the pilot episode, which Waititi directed, and it boasts a cast including Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, Spencer House, Nikki Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani, and Cary Elwes.
Details about the characters portrayed by these actors remain under wraps, and it is still unclear if Very Young Frankenstein will pay homage to its predecessor through black-and-white aesthetics, reminiscent of classic monster films. it appears that the series will take a fresh and innovative approach to the storyline, a strategy that proved successful in the adaptation of WWDITS for television by amplifying its comedic elements.
“Very Young Frankenstein combines elements from the beloved original film with the witty, unconventional humor that has characterized FX comedies over the years, resulting in a wholly unique interpretation of the classic tale,” stated Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, in a comment to Deadline. “With the expertise of Stefani, Taika, and Garrett, along with the legendary Mel Brooks, we are confident that audiences will enjoy watching this series as much as we are enjoying its creation.”
