Jason Calacanis, the least wealthy member of the All-In Podcast’s circle of billionaire friends, claims victory over Lina Khan, the former chair of the Federal Trade Commission and a notable advocate for antitrust regulations, after she failed to show up for a scheduled debate.
Calacanis’s version of events diverges significantly from reality, as is often the case with his narratives.
On July 15, Calacanis announced on X that he had received an invitation from a major media outlet for a debate with Lina Khan on [mergers and acquisitions] and proclaimed, “She chickened out!” The following day, Khan’s communications director, Douglas Farrar, issued a series of important clarifications that effectively refuted Calacanis’s account.
“I manage communications for Lina Khan. I’m the one who declined the invitation back in May because she is currently on maternity leave,” Farrar stated. “Moreover, it was not a debate. The proposal was for ‘opposite sides finding common ground.’” He included a screenshot of his email response to a representative from the New York Times, clearly stating, “We appreciate the opportunity, but we must decline. Lina is on maternity leave.”

Faced with this information, Calacanis quickly retracted his earlier assertion of having triumphed in a debate. “My apologies, didn’t read the entire email! I look forward to the discussion or the common ground format,” he posted on X.
Didn’t read the entire email, Jason? The body contained just 25 words, and you opted to focus on the 20 that allowed you to claim that Khan was avoiding you, ignoring the last five that clarified the situation. When someone mocked him for his failure to comprehend the message, Calacanis defended himself by saying, “I get 500 emails a day…”
Several inconsistencies arise from this situation. According to the screenshots, the original invitation for the conversation was sent to Khan on May 13, and Farrar replied on her behalf the same day. This indicates that the host of the proposed conversation was aware at least two months in advance that it would not take place. It’s reasonable to assume Calacanis was notified of this promptly. Yet, perhaps he was not! It’s possible that it was suggested the conversation occur in July, and when that date passed without the event occurring, Calacanis hastily tweeted that Khan had backed out.
This explanation could make sense, but it doesn’t appear to align with the facts. Farrar presented an additional email from the individual who initially reached out to arrange the discussion, in which Farrar inquired why Calacanis assumed Khan had chickened out. “I apologize for that. I informed him that Ms. Khan was on maternity leave and that I intended to follow up when she returned,” the individual replied. “His tweet is simply false.”
To summarize: Both Calacanis and Khan were approached about a discussion aimed at finding common ground hosted by the New York Times back in May. Almost immediately, Khan’s representatives informed the Times that she was on maternity leave and would be unable to participate. Calacanis was made aware of this, but due to his inability to comprehend a brief 25-word email, he chose to wait two months before publicly claiming that Khan had backed out of a debate with him.
One might label this a misunderstanding, but it seems that only one party truly “misunderstood” the circumstances, and remarkably, that misunderstanding cast him in a favorable light while portraying his ideological opponent unfavorably. The reality of the situation is clear.
