The renowned former professional baseball player, Mariano Rivera, along with his wife Clara Rivera, is facing serious allegations of covering up incidents of child sexual abuse that reportedly took place both at their home and during a summer camp organized by their church. This shocking revelation is part of a new lawsuit that has come to light and was first reported by TMZ Sports.
These explosive allegations have been detailed in court documents filed this month in New York. Notably, while neither Rivera nor Clara are named as defendants in the lawsuit, their names appear repeatedly throughout the legal papers, indicating their significant involvement in the events described. This has raised questions and concerns regarding their roles in this distressing situation.
In the legal documents, a woman identified as Mom A Doe claims that in 2018, her daughter, referred to as Jane A Doe, was persuaded by Clara Rivera to travel to Florida for an internship supported by their church, Refuge of Hope. This event has raised significant concerns about the safety and well-being of minors involved in church-sponsored activities, highlighting the need for stringent protective measures.
However, during her time in Florida, Mom A Doe alleges that Jane A Doe was sexually abused by an individual described as a “much older camper” identified only as “MG.” Upon learning of the potential abuse, Mom A Doe claims she promptly informed Clara about the situation, emphasizing the urgency and seriousness of her concerns for her daughter’s safety.
According to the allegations outlined in the lawsuit, Clara Rivera assured Mom A Doe that she would investigate the situation thoroughly. However, the documents reveal that when Clara and Mariano arrived at the camp, they allegedly “each individually isolated and intimidated Jane A Doe to remain silent,” with the apparent intention of protecting their church and its associated summer program from any negative fallout.
Mom A Doe further claims that the Riveras reassured her that everything was fine, despite her concerns and the known risks, stating that Jane A Doe remained vulnerable to further sexual abuse by MG. This troubling neglect raises significant ethical questions about the responsibilities of adults, particularly those in positions of authority within the church.
After their return to New York from Florida, Mom A Doe asserts in her lawsuit that Jane A Doe was again sexually abused by MG during a barbecue hosted by the Riveras at their New York home. Mom A Doe alleges that the Riveras and others present “took no action to protect” her daughter from this perpetrator, indicating a pattern of negligence that raises serious alarm about the safety measures in place for minors associated with the church.
Years later, in 2021, Mom A Doe alleges that Jane A Doe suffered sexual abuse once again, this time at the hands of a male adult who served as a youth leader for the Riveras’ church, Refuge of Hope. Once again, Mom A Doe claims that individuals associated with the church failed to take the necessary precautions to ensure her daughter’s safety, highlighting a disturbing trend of negligence within the church’s leadership.
Mariano Rivera, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest closers in baseball history, spent his illustrious career pitching for the New York Yankees from 1995 until 2013. Following his retirement, he transitioned into a pastoral role at Refuge of Hope, where Clara Rivera took on the responsibilities of overseeing daily operations, as reported by The Independent.
As of now, neither Mariano nor Clara Rivera have publicly commented on the serious allegations outlined in the lawsuit, leaving many to wonder about their perspective on the claims and the implications of the ongoing legal proceedings.
