As Meta prepares to launch its augmented reality (AR) glasses next year, an intriguing image has surfaced revealing a potential design for one version of the company’s upcoming virtual reality (VR) headset. This insight comes from VR researcher @Lunayian, who shared a brief video that was recently included in the HorizonOS Prescription Lens firmware package.
According to insights from Road to VR, the image showcases Meta’s Phoenix mixed reality headset. This device appears to be one of several advanced VR/AR units currently under development by Meta.
Among other innovative models in the pipeline are Meta’s Hypernova AI glasses— anticipated to represent the next generation of its AI-driven smart glasses— and the Aria AR device, characterized by its robust black frames designed to accommodate various technological components.
The newly revealed Phoenix device is expected to be the next evolution in Meta’s Quest VR lineup. This development indicates that while Meta may have shifted focus from its VR and metaverse aspirations, it is still committed to these concepts.
Meta continues to view VR as a crucial part of its technological evolution, integrating AI into its upcoming connectivity solutions. As VR technology advances, AI’s role is likely to become increasingly significant.
However, Meta faces challenges in its hardware ambitions. While interest in its AI glasses is growing, recent criticisms surrounding the misuse of its recording-enabled glasses have cast doubt on its future plans and could adversely affect device sales.
