Netflix is embarking on a significant transformation of its TV user interface, introducing a sleek and modern aesthetic that prioritizes user experience. This update promises to provide personalized recommendations that evolve based on your viewing habits, enhancing Netflix’s ability to predict what you might enjoy watching next. Over the coming weeks and months, users can expect to see this much-anticipated redesign rolled out across various devices.
The primary goal of this initiative is to streamline the process of discovering new content, minimizing the time you spend scrolling through endless options. This means you will be able to find something engaging to watch much more quickly, reducing the frustration that often accompanies choosing a show or movie to stream.
Originally, Netflix crafted its TV user interface specifically for traditional movies and TV shows, but as the landscape of entertainment evolved—including the introduction of live events and cloud gaming—the platform needed to adapt. According to Eunice Kim, Netflix’s chief product officer, the company has been diligently working on this revamped TV experience since last year. “Our redesigned TV home page is simpler, more intuitive, and better represents the vast array of entertainment available on Netflix today,” Kim explained during a recent press call.
The new design will feature prominently larger tiles for each show, movie, and other content types. Instead of presenting information about a selected title at the top of the screen, this redesign integrates all relevant details into a cohesive layout that enhances user interaction.
Each tile will now offer more immediate contextual information to help viewers understand why they might enjoy a particular title. For instance, it may highlight that a show or movie has recently been added to the library, is currently trending in Netflix’s top 10 most-watched list, has received critical acclaim through awards, or may be leaving the service soon. This tailored approach is aimed at ensuring that users feel confident in their viewing choices.
As you navigate through the new tiles, the animations are designed to be more dynamic and fluid compared to the current interface, as stated by Kim. Additionally, the updated UI will facilitate the promotion of live events—such as NFL games on Christmas Day, WWE programming, and specials like Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney—placing them prominently at the top of your home screen for easy access.
The redesigned main navigation bar has been strategically placed at the top of the screen, featuring tabs for home, shows, movies, games, and My Netflix. In the My Netflix section, users can easily access their “continue watching” queue, personal lists, and reminders. The search function, allowing browsing through various categories, is also conveniently located in this area. Users can quickly switch to the main navigation bar by pressing the back button on their TV remote.
As you explore the platform, Netflix will continuously adapt its recommendations in real-time. For example, if you express your enthusiasm for Squid Game by giving it a double thumbs-up, Netflix may immediately offer a curated row of similar titles further down the home screen. Your interactions, such as the trailers you view and your search history, will influence these personalized recommendations. This seamless integration aims to deliver a more engaging user experience.
Netflix has always integrated viewing patterns into its personalized suggestions. “What’s new about the responsive recommendations is our focus on active browsing behavior,” Elizabeth Stone, the company’s chief technology officer, noted. “This may also consider factors like the time of day, and in the future, it might incorporate explicit user input regarding what they are looking for in their next show or movie.”
In addition to these updates, Netflix has initiated testing for a new generative AI search feature powered by OpenAI. This innovative tool enables users to search for titles based on their current mood. For example, if you feel like watching something that is both slightly scary and humorous—perfect for fans of the horror-comedy genre—you can request suggestions that fit this unique combination. Users in Australia and New Zealand were the first to experience this feature, and Netflix plans to expand access to more subscribers starting this week as part of an opt-in beta test.
Moreover, Netflix is set to commence a global trial of a vertical video feature on mobile devices in the upcoming weeks. This feature will showcase clips and trailers, accessible from a dedicated row on the app’s home screen. Users will have the option to watch a show or movie instantly or add it to their My List for later viewing. Additionally, there will be a sharing option for these clips. Netflix has previously explored similar features featuring comedy clips and snippets from children’s programming over the past few years.
In response to inquiries about whether Netflix would adopt a model similar to Spotify by allowing sign-ups directly from its iOS app after Apple modified its App Store payment policies, Eunice Kim stated that the company is closely monitoring the situation but has no updates to provide at this time. Until further guidance is available, Netflix will continue to adhere to the existing App Store policies while evaluating how best to implement any potential changes moving forward.
