It has been over a decade since Lionsgate acquired the rights to adapt the immensely popular manga series, Naruto, into a full-length film. After more than two years since Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton joined the project, the long wait is finally coming to an end. Naruto is officially in the works.
On Thursday, Cretton announced via social media that the casting process for the main characters of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura—collectively known as Team 7—has officially begun. He expressed his excitement, stating, “Kishimoto-sensei’s narratives have inspired countless fans globally, and I am honored to bring his beloved world and characters to the big screen in live action for the first time. I’m excited to start this worldwide casting search for our Team 7 and to bring the amazing universe of Naruto to life!”
In a press release, Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto shared his enthusiasm, saying, “Miracles are happening to me one after another. My work, Naruto, is truly becoming a Hollywood movie! The fact that it will be directed by the talented Destin Daniel Cretton is an even greater miracle. I can hardly believe it! With so many miracles already aligning, I hope for even more. I eagerly anticipate the extraordinary and passionate actors who will breathe life into my characters!”
Since its debut in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1999, Naruto has consistently gained popularity, fueled by an anime series, video games, animated feature films, and much more. it has never had a high-profile, live-action Hollywood adaptation—until now.
With casting underway, it’s likely that Naruto is targeting a 2027 production timeline. Could we see it in theaters by 2028? That remains to be seen.
