The surge of artificial intelligence-generated content is rapidly transforming social platforms, creating confusion, skepticism, and sometimes even alarm among users. Despite this, social media platforms are intensifying their investments in AI technology, which is likely to result in even deeper AI integration.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal released a report detailing how Meta and various AI developers are investing significantly more in their AI initiatives than they are publicly disclosing, with many financial arrangements hidden from their financial statements.

According to the WSJ, Meta has accumulated approximately $693 billion in off-balance-sheet commitments primarily related to artificial intelligence spending.

These expenditures are in addition to the obligations reported in Meta’s quarterly filings. In its Q2 update, released last month, the company projected its AI infrastructure investments could reach $145 billion by 2026.

However, this estimate does not account for additional costs that will arise once these projects are finalized.

According to the WSJ: “Meta’s enormous ‘Hyperion’ data center project in Louisiana, which spans roughly 1,700 football fields, illustrates how significant obligations can be kept off the balance sheets of tech companies. Meta originally agreed to lease Hyperion for four years starting in 2029, with options to renew for up to 20 years. It committed to ensuring bondholders are compensated if it does not fulfill the full two-decade term, but the company has determined that payments under this guarantee are unlikely, so it has not included any liabilities in its balance sheet.”

This means that Meta does not have to report any financial liabilities from this project until 2029. The WSJ estimates this forms part of around $347 billion in future lease obligations that Meta is currently able to keep off its official accounts.

While Meta has committed many billions to AI development, it could be liable for far more than what has been disclosed.

The company’s strategy is based on the belief that its AI projects represent a massive potential revenue stream. if these expectations do not materialize, it could lead to dire financial consequences for the organization.

In essence, Meta has a strong incentive to generate excitement around its AI tools and services. As such, the company is likely to promote these technologies vigorously across its applications, in retail outlets, on advertisements, and in numerous other venues.

The critical takeaway is that Meta must ensure the success of its AI initiatives; otherwise, it risks incurring trillions of dollars in costs for a technology that fails to deliver.

Will Meta’s significant investment in AI ultimately yield positive results?

As SMT recently pointed out, a major challenge for Meta’s expansive AI vision could stem from the company’s troubled history regarding data management and privacy, along with generally low consumer trust in Meta.

Currently, Meta is embroiled in a significant legal battle concerning social media-related issues, which could potentially result in billions of dollars in compensation claims from numerous users of its platforms. Media coverage of these issues, along with ongoing efforts to limit social media access for teens, has contributed to a generally negative perception of the company. A 2025 survey conducted by Forrester identified Meta as one of the least trusted companies globally.

For Meta’s AI aspirations to succeed, a significant shift in public perception is necessary. Achieving this will require millions of individuals to agree to allow the company’s AI tools to access sensitive personal information, including health data and financial records. This access would enable Meta’s AI agents to offer tailored advice and actionable plans that could benefit users in various aspects of their lives.

This concept is intriguing, yet it seems improbable that sufficient numbers of people will be willing to place their trust in Meta at this stage.

That singular factor could lead to these substantial AI investments becoming a burden for the company in just a few years.
