A man faced an urgent situation when the safety bar of a moving roller coaster unexpectedly became unlatched during his ride. According to the local news outlet KPNX (12News), this frightening incident occurred on Sunday, November 24, at Castles N’ Coasters in Arizona, during a day meant for celebration.
Understanding the Roller Coaster Incident at Castles N’ Coasters
Although media reports have chosen not to disclose the man’s identity at his request, he shared that he was at the amusement park to celebrate his niece’s birthday. While enjoying the thrilling Desert Storm roller coaster, which features an exhilarating double loop, the safety bar became unlatched just moments after the ride commenced. The unsettling event unfolded rapidly—within seconds of the ride’s start, as the roller coaster began its ascent. At the peak of the ride, he realized that the safety bar was not properly secured. He claimed to have heard the bar latch correctly at the beginning, but the ride operator failed to conduct a physical check.
“As we start the climb, you hear the familiar click of the roller coaster chain,” he recounted to 12News. “Just as we reach the top, I heard a click that was different from the chain’s sound, prompting me to check my lap bar one last time, and that’s when it released.”
With only moments to spare, he quickly exited the roller coaster cart, landing on the ride’s catwalk. It appears that the operator of the Desert Storm ride was completely unaware of the incident until the man safely reached the ground. During his interview, he expressed concern regarding the lack of vigilance displayed by the employees at Castles N’ Coasters. He emphasized that if the female operator had been aware of his precarious situation outside the cart, she could have taken immediate action, such as using the emergency release. Ultimately, he believes that his rapid decision-making played a crucial role in ensuring his safety.
Reflections on the Most Alarming Aspect of the Incident
Even though he wished to remain anonymous, cell phone footage captured the dramatic moment when the man climbed out of the roller coaster cart. He shared with 12News that the most distressing part of this ordeal was the realization that a child could have been in his position, potentially leading to a far more tragic outcome.
“I think the worst part is having the kids there and knowing it could have been one of them,” he lamented. “It shouldn’t cost your life to have fun.”
Furthermore, he commented on the ongoing conversation around amusement park safety regulations in Arizona, noting that the state does not actively regulate its parks. Instead, it mandates that amusement parks have their roller coasters inspected annually by either private entities or insurance companies. This gap in regulation has raised concerns among patrons about their safety while enjoying thrilling rides.
“There absolutely needs to be a change,” he asserted. “All amusement parks that have people’s lives in their hands need to be better regulated.” He continued, “The most terrifying part was their negligence and the total lack of care throughout this entire incident.”
The man stated that he filed a report with Castles N’ Coasters but did not receive a copy for his records. While it remains uncertain whether he will pursue legal action following this alarming incident, it draws parallels to a recent case involving a Florida woman who sued Universal Orlando. Earlier this year, Geriann Clem visited the park in February 2023 and alleged that she suffered “severe and personal permanent injuries” after riding the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. She is now seeking a jury trial along with monetary compensation for damages incurred.
