The excitement of summer is upon us, bringing with it a wave of new anime releases for this season. For those who are passionate about shonen anime, there are eagerly anticipated returning titles like Dan Da Dan and Kaiju No. 8, alongside a fresh addition to the lineup: Gachiakuta, which is set to premiere next month. This season promises a thrilling array of stories and characters that will captivate viewers and keep them coming back for more.
Based on the ongoing manga by Kei Urana, Gachiakuta follows the gripping journey of Rudo Surebec, a young teenager navigating life in the harsh slums known as the Sphere. His world turns upside down when he discovers the tragic fate of his foster father, who has been murdered. Wrongfully accused and convicted of this crime, Rudo is sentenced to the infamous The Pit, a vast dumping ground beneath the city where society’s outcasts and criminals reside. In a twist of fate, he encounters a man named Enjin, who rescues him from this disastrous predicament and extends an invitation to join the Cleaners—a unique community that crafts weapons from discarded items, harnessing their innate power to combat monstrous beings born from literal refuse.
Rudo’s motivation to join the Cleaners stems from his burning desire to return to the thriving upper world and exact revenge on those Sphereites who betrayed him. The creative prowess of Studio Bones, renowned for producing hits like My Hero Academia and its Vigilantes spinoff, brings a unique edge to Gachiakuta. Unlike the more optimistic Deku, Rudo’s character is steeped in anger and a quest for vengeance. This stark contrast offers a compelling narrative that could draw in viewers interested in a darker storyline and explore themes of social injustice and personal redemption.
Gachiakuta is scheduled to debut on Sunday, July 6, exclusively on Crunchyroll. The series will feature captivating opening and ending themes by the bands Paledusk (“HUGs”) and Dustcell (“Tomoshibi”). Before the official release, global premiere events with advance screenings will take place on July 4 and 5 in various locations, including the US, Japan, and Brazil.
