Log In Soon: Reddit’s New User Requirement

Reddit has long presented mobile users who aren’t logged in with a frustrating overlay that insists they download the Reddit app. This intrusive experience is set to become even more widespread, as indicated by a recent announcement from Reddit CEO Steve Huffman.

According to a report by The Verge, Huffman, known on the platform as “spez,” revealed on Thursday that Reddit will transition to a “primarily logged-in experience.” He emphasized that optimizing Reddit’s functionality requires personalization. In essence, this means new restrictions will limit what unregistered users can access, likely extending from mobile to desktop versions. Huffman noted that this represents a significant shift for advocates of an open internet, including himself.

“As someone whose life has been shaped by the open internet, this change feels substantial,” Huffman shared. “I believe this decision is best for our platform and our business.”

He further explained, “Reddit has grown so large that without personalization, it loses its relevance. Even more concerning, it may simply fail to function effectively.”

The requirement for user logins aims to enhance the relevance of content presented, allowing users to quickly navigate to their preferred subreddits, games, or specific threads. Huffman stated, “We want more users to enjoy the core functionalities and value of Reddit, which necessitates being logged in.”

This strategy also seeks to cultivate a more “intentional relationship with Reddit,” while preventing unauthorized access from web scrapers. Huffman pointed out that the “vast majority” of unauthorized access occurs during logged-out browsing, which often involves scraping and misappropriating Reddit’s data.

While Huffman did not elaborate on the specific changes users can expect, he did mention some areas that may remain accessible to those not logged in.

“For instance, the front page being available without a login is both useful and essential,” he noted. “We also want users to share posts and allow visitors arriving from search engines or other sources to view the linked content.”

Regarding the timeline for these changes, Huffman indicated that Reddit would “test this in select international markets outside the U.S. in the coming months.” In response to a question about whether users searching for technical solutions would face constant login prompts, he acknowledged that the company needs to “find the right balance.”

“Visitors coming from shared links or search referrals aren’t the primary focus here,” Huffman clarified.

Nevertheless, this shift will likely impact a wide range of users. This includes individuals who do not have a Reddit account but frequently include “Reddit” in their Google searches to find reliable information, as it remains a trusted method for troubleshooting various devices. There are numerous reasons why even regular Reddit users may not always be logged in, such as privacy concerns, sessions in incognito mode, a preference for temporary accounts, or simply wanting to browse content without contributing. Huffman mentioned that Reddit is reintroducing a “truly private” incognito mode, but this feature requires using the app.

Huffman emphasized that Reddit does not seek to obtain users’ real-life identities. he acknowledged that mandatory logins could benefit the company’s advertising efforts: “Non-targeted ads waste space for everyone.” When a user pointed out this seeming contradiction, Huffman responded, “On Reddit, we target ads based on your interests as demonstrated by the subreddits you engage with. When I say we don’t know you, I mean we don’t know your name or personal identity.”

(Reddit also shares this targeting data with paid partners on an opt-out basis. Most social media platforms claim to share only limited, anonymized data with ad networks, yet a robust advertising economy exists that can build interconnected profiles from that data.)

Huffman’s announcement has not been well-received by users. As of late Thursday evening, the post had zero upvotes and around 200 comments.

It is fair to say that any method of managing a social media platform will attract criticism. Reddit has previously implemented unpopular changes. Earlier this year, it restricted access to a popular simplified version of the site known as “Old Reddit,” allowing only users with accounts older than six months to access it. The platform also increased the use of intrusive overlays promoting the Reddit app for mobile users.

A notable clash between frustrated users and profit-driven management occurred in 2023 when Huffman announced that Reddit would start charging for API access before its initial public offering. This announcement led to widespread outrage, mass account deletions, and a subreddit blackout across the platform. Reddit’s management remained firm on pricing, making only minor concessions elsewhere, and compelled the most popular subreddits to return online by threatening to replace their moderators.

As The Verge reported, this announcement coincided with Reddit’s Q3 2026 earnings report, which included Huffman’s letter to shareholders explaining that search traffic had “decreased significantly,” with logged-out and web traffic being the most affected.

“In October, we observed a drop of over 1 million referrals weekly from search traffic,” Huffman noted in the letter, adding that app and logged-in daily active users account for “over 80% of Reddit’s monetization.”
