Instagram Algorithms: Chief Cautions Against Their Removal

Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri expressed to reporters on Thursday that removing content ranking algorithms would significantly diminish user engagement and overall interest on the platform. He emphasized that creators who depend on Instagram to connect with their audience would face serious challenges if these algorithms were eliminated.

These remarks followed the Australian government’s recent announcement of a plan to introduce legislation aimed at limiting the use of engagement-driven algorithms within social media applications. The government believes that minimizing algorithmic amplification will help tackle issues related to the spread of harmful content and social media addiction.

The proposed regulations, currently in the consultation phase, could lead to Australian users returning to a chronological feed, displaying posts solely from accounts they follow.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, views this potential change as unfavorable.

According to The Guardian, Mosseri conducted a briefing with Australian journalists this week to launch a new series called “Algo Confessions.” This series will showcase celebrities discussing how algorithms influence their experiences and help them delve into their interests.

During the briefing, Mosseri addressed concerns regarding algorithmic amplification, although he did not specifically mention Australia’s proposed restrictions on algorithm usage.

As Mosseri articulated, “What happens [without algorithms] is people become a bit less interested in the experience and they use [Instagram] a lot less, which then means that there’s less reach to go around and people start to get more and more mad about the fact that their reach is going down because the overall pie gets smaller.”

This sentiment was echoed in a recent post on his Instagram account, where he discussed the implications of content ranking.

“If we do not rank content, we know that the feed for the consumer gets overrun with content from accounts that post the most often. Businesses and brands tend to post significantly more than creators, which shifts Instagram away from a friend-oriented and creator-oriented platform towards one dominated by businesses and news publishers,” Mosseri stated.

He added that without content ranking, users would encounter less content overall on Instagram, which would subsequently reduce the reach for creators.

This shift would likely result in negative consequences for both the creator economy and brand strategies on the app.

Mosseri’s concerns about declining engagement and reduced Instagram usage could align with the goals of any regulations aimed at addressing the addictive nature of social media.

If users engage with Instagram less frequently, it would likely support one of the main objectives of these proposed regulations, while also reducing harmful exposure by showing fewer posts overall. Mosseri’s warnings may not deter regulators from considering the impacts of these restrictions.

Mosseri indicated that only a “vocal minority” of social media users desire a return to chronological feeds, suggesting that if this change takes place, many might regret it.

Nevertheless, it is essential to recognize that Mosseri’s perspective is driven by business interests and a commitment to maintaining Instagram’s value as a platform for meaningful connections.
