The casting news for Sunrise on the Reaping continues to excite fans of the Hunger Games franchise. The latest addition to this anticipated film is Jesse Plemons, a talented actor known for his remarkable performances in Civil War and Black Mirror. Plemons will take on the pivotal role of Plutarch Heavensbee, a character previously portrayed by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the original series. Following Hoffman’s tragic passing in 2014, the filmmakers digitally recreated his character for the 2015 film Mockingjay Part 2, redistributing some of his scenes to other characters to honor his legacy.
In the Hunger Games narrative, Plutarch serves as a Gamemaker for the oppressive Capitol, but he is later revealed to be a significant figure in the rebellion against their tyranny. His character adds depth and intrigue to the story, and fans are eager to see how Plemons will bring this complex role to life. Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years prior to the events of the first Hunger Games, depicting Plutarch as a young boy from District 12 who works as a cameraman. As he navigates the brutal landscape of the Games, he occasionally offers encouragement to Haymitch Abernathy, a character who becomes crucial to the survival of those caught in the deadly competition.
Earlier this week, Lionsgate also announced the casting of Joseph Zada, who will portray the young Haymitch, alongside Whitney Peak as his love interest Lenore Baird, and McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner. These casting choices promise to enrich the backstory of Haymitch and provide context to his future connections with Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the protagonists of the original series.

The film Sunrise on the Reaping was announced alongside the release of the book by Suzanne Collins. Following the impressive success of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which focused on President Snow’s early life and was released as a novel in 2020 before being adapted into a film in 2023, the franchise is diving back into its rich history. This prequel aims to explore how Haymitch triumphed in his own Games and how his life intertwined with the families of future heroes Katniss and Peeta, offering fans deeper insights into the Hunger Games universe.
Fans can eagerly anticipate Sunrise on the Reaping, directed by the returning Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence, as it is scheduled to grace theaters on November 20, 2026. This release will surely attract both die-hard fans and newcomers to the franchise, who are eager to experience the evolving narrative of the Hunger Games.
