Humanoid Robot Performs Cartwheels and Kicks for Under $6,000

For an affordable price lower than that of a fully equipped MacBook Pro, you can invest in Unitree’s innovative humanoid robot, known as the R1. This remarkable robot is available for just ,900 and boasts a weight of approximately 55 lbs and a height of around four feet. It is designed with a sophisticated Large Multimodal Model, enabling it to execute a variety of complex tasks and functions efficiently.

Curious about the potential applications of the R1? You’re not alone in wondering what this robot can actually do. While Unitree has emphasized that the R1 is “fully customizable,” they showcased its impressive capabilities through a captivating video demonstrating its ability to perform cartwheels, handstands, boxing, roundhouse kicks, and even running downhill. However, practical examples of its utility have yet to be revealed. The lightweight design features an ultra-wide view and a four-microphone array that enhances its ability to recognize voices and images. Additionally, it is equipped with state-of-the-art Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. One can easily envision a future where individuals program the R1 to serve as a robot butler, handling everyday tasks, similar to what Meta is reportedly developing. Interestingly, there’s even a possibility of setting up two R1 robots to compete against each other, as highlighted by Unitree’s promotion of a unique fighting tournament, reminiscent of the less refined version of the 2011 film Real Steel.

The R1 represents a significantly lower entry price compared to Unitree’s earlier humanoid model, the G1, which starts at a staggering $16,000 and faced challenges during its demonstration at CES 2025. Although the R1’s sub-$6,000 price might still seem high to some, it remains considerably more affordable than other similar alternatives, such as Tesla’s Optimus bot, which is projected to cost at least $20,000.
